Could New M3 Beat An E55 or M5?
I've been hearing that expectations for the new M3 coming soon should put this car in the 4 second range 0-60. If this holds true...does anyone feel the new M3 could be faster than the M5 and E55 in the 1/4 mile!?
Considering the E46 was faster than the E39 when it came out, I'm thinking when the day comes, this could be a close one when lining up with the new M3.

If it came with a stick shift there might be some interesting competition but dont think it will be too close...
It will make for a fabulous track car though ... but I imagine you would still need to upgrade the brakes ... thats at least one thing you dont need to do with Porsches...

I heard 400 hp 4 litre v8 ... ? exactly 4/5ths of M5 motor in every respect. Have to think this makes sense from cost perspective...
So, NO to both ...

I'm sure it will get off the line quickly but run out of steam past 60, just like the E46 M3, which is only a little faster than a 330 on the highway.

The new M3 might be as quick 0-60 mph but I doubt it will be quicker above 60 mph and in the 1/4 mile. This was also true of the E46 M3 vs E39 M5 comparison. If you look at almost every publication, the M5 owned the M3 above 60 mph. With a 100hp advantage and probably 400lbs more girth..the E60 M5 will put some distance on the M3 heading into the higher speeds.

Ld M3 definately was not faster at any popint then old M5...the higher the speed the bigger the gap...
With euro LC new M3 could possible neat E55 on regular street...but on prepared track where E55 can hook up properly then NO...really those new M5s with Euro LC lauch like 4wd Rice rockets...very faast of the line....

The car is not even out yet and everyone is saying "NO". Truth is none of you have any clue. Have you driven one NO! Have you seen drag times or 0-60 times on one NO! So how do any of you know? IMO in stop light racing the M3 might beat a stock E55K or at least hang with it. 1/4 mile times might be a different story. So lets wait for the car to come out before everyone says no it won't beat a E55 simply because you own one.

order the pullies and ECU
no more worries....
BTW: I would not be surprised if the new M3 with 420hp+/- and 310 +/- and SMG3 hits low 4's or high 3's.

but the LC is only useful for a few runs and it shuts down for cooling.

On a quick milk run, there is nothing to worry about. The lack of torque of the M3 will be easily beat around town by E55, E63, M5 and M6
On the freeway that thing will be a rocket like the M5 or M6.
Like somebody else said, its hard to speculate without much information.
But we do know it is 4.0L V8, 420+/-hp and torque is around 310+/-
weight should be about the same or a bit heavier (but not by much)
SMG3 will be available as well as the purist 6 manual.
So.. if you take the RS4 performance (delete 400lbs, AWD launch, better weight distributio) you will yield some rough estimate.
My prediction is about 12.7 1/4 and 112 trap speed.

Only time will tell. The way cars are developing nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if it is at least on par with an E55. But like the M5, don't expect anywhere near the torque level of the 55K motor. The E46 M3 was actually on par with the E39 M5, so i would expect similar performance.

2004 E55 AMG
The E46 M3 is definitely not faster than a E39 M5. It feels quicker, but that is just because of the S54's character and the car's lighter weight.
Impromptu races to 60mph from a dig will have the car that leaves the line first winning. They are identical in this regard.
From a dig to 100mph the M5 will pull a couple cars (maybe a car and a half) or so.
From 60-1XXmph the M5 destroys the M3.
The E55 is clearly faster than both from any start to any finish.

Any previous comparisons the the E46 M3 really won't be valid with the new version. The in-line six of the E46 has totally different charateristics than the new V8, which will be similar to the M5's V10. Look for the new M3 to have a high-reving, fairly low torque engine that will pull hard on the top end, similar to the M5. How well it performs against the other cars will depend on its curb weight. Look for the weight/power ratio to be a little higher than the M5. I doubt that BMW will allow the M3 to be faster than their flagship car. This was also true back in the day when Pontiac detuned the Firebird 400 so that it lagged the GTO by a bit.

First, there is no way known that BMW will let the M3 be faster in a straight line than the M5 (over 400m/qmile).
Second, the M5 is (maybe) as fast as the E55, not faster (400m/qmile).
So, new M3 wont be faster than E55.
And if I'm wrong I dont really care..................even if I own an E55.
