Larger IC heat exchanger!!

The other day while the car was being spoiled with Kleeman cams, i found out that the intake temp is reaching 100c on full load and 65c on normal driving....with the help of my mechanic, we took some measurments of the stock IC heat exchanger and ordered a larger one from a reputed custom heat exchanger and radiator manufacturer...it was only 550USD so it was worth the test!!

installed the exchanger today and test drove the car...i drove it till 260kmp (162mph) and punched it from 0 to 160kph(100mph) and back to 0 again the intake temp never passed 80c on full load and 50c while cruising...WOW the car not only looks better but also feels better and stronger...

I read somwhere on this forum that i will loose power...what up with that??

My camera is not with me so I will post some pictures tmrw

Can you post the dimensions and also the details on where you ordered the part?

Nice test. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you,

Darren

Hey Khaled,

I see you are still having fun modifying your beast. Post some pics of the new heat exchanger and how you mounted it.. Sounds like a nice mod!

I also have a complete seperate heat exchanger being made, but lately I got side tracked with other things and havent got it done yet.It will be a complete replacement of the stock exchanger but larger. As soon as Im get caught up with a few things I'll get back on this project and post some pics. Its not a hard thing to do,anybody can have one made.It finding the time to do it for me thats holding me back right now.

That should be the next mod everyone should do. No brainer if the IC is more effective. Please post pics and where you got it from

I don't think the IC provides any gains, doesn't it prevent loss?

Depends on how you look at it I guess
The cooler you can keep the fluid, the lower the air temps will be
reduced, the cooler the air going into the combustion chamber will be.
Hence: more Hp
The larger IC will help to benefit (keep the Hp up) the motor to keep/sustain
Hp. (Hope I'm not confusing people here)

a 20 degree celcius drop in intake temps at full load?! that is a massive improvement!

Derek id say you are on the money in that you may not get "more" power than the car was released with, but as mentioned its the build up of heat that slowly drains performance as heatsoak sets in. As his test shows, 100c intake temp may have the engine pulling some timing to prevent detonation and hence lose a bit of power. As i see it the larger exchanger will ward off heat soak, and keep the car feeling like it does when you nail it just after its up to operating temp, and not so much after it does after a hard run through the hills! I believe thats what Ken is saying

My goal is too gain cooling area and isolate the IC system from the engine coolant system. Will it actually gain power? I doubt it but it will definately help and not hurt.

Khaled,

That thing looks great. Yeah I will be pulling the front off my 06 this weekend to take measurements and to see what is the largest IC Exchanger I can fit. I have a radiator guy who is going to see if it is feasible to build me something like this: http://www.stewartcomponents.net/Mer...egory_Code=ICS

Here is a link to a thread that discusses additional intercooler cooling upgrades.

That looks great

The intercooler your using looks significantly larger than stock.
The Evosport one looks like the size of a stock oil cooler?

haters crazy
I was looking into this as soon as I got my car. I will be putting a different bumper on my clk in order to fit a larger cooler. Some turbo guys warned me about going too big and having a boost drop but I think thats only relevant for turbo's. Yours looks really good and motivates me even more to get mine done! Where did you get yours custom made?

Evosport Cooling Upgrade adds an additional heat exchanger. Stock one is retained. Go through the thread again, the details are in there.

You are mixing up intercooler with an air/water heat exchanger. There is only water flowing through this one, not air.

Haven't I read before that the SL55 has a larger IC radiator? And that this might fit. (Certainly the quality would be there...cost hmmm not so sure it would be as cheap as the 500-600 $ quoted)

BUMPITY BUMP

Kaled would be very interested in this heat exchanger ... where was it made ? can we order them ? Cost ?

Has the intercooler circuit been split from the engine coolant circuit ? ... if not I think this might give you additional gains as it seems the new Heat exchanger has a decent amount of fluid content now to do this.

Also do you have a pic of the stock heat exchanger?

i'm curious on how these aftermarket heat exchangers affect your A/C performance, specifically since these HE's cover the subcool regions of the condenser. I've noticed that the car does already have a bit of AC degredation due to the high heat rejections and high airside restrictions between the front end and the condenser.

has there been a study on this?

also, how do these aftermarket systems affect the radiator performance. are the top tank temperatures increased due to the increased restriction in the front, although the kompressor coolant loop reads lower?

just curious, since as always, there's always tradeoffs for doing these upgrades, and there hasn't been too much discussion on this. also, for the air-to-air heat exchanger, there's also a dP in charge air from the plumbing/inner passages/etc..... has a study been done to determine the optimal point between available boost pressure and decreased Charge Air temps?
