My driving style would fit better behind a v10, 7 speed SMG3 gearbox... that thing would always be at the track if i had one!

Bob, here's a formula that will have you beating up on 63's and 55's alike.
Take 1 part E60 M5
Add 1 set, SuperSprint headers
Add 1 set, SuperSprint catbacks
Add 1 Hamann ECU
Voila- 640 horsepower.
I just realized we're the same age. Do it to it man, you're gonna love this car, ultimate stealth capabilities and the dynamic seats are the shiznite. Just remember to get the red interior, do not pass go, get the red interior.

Yeah 640hp is waaaay too much... i think that with these mods you're actualy closer to 550-560hp... remember that the car has more than the 507 quoted by bmw (around 520hp).

I do agree, though, that you are not going to pick up 100 rwhp on an NA car with just those mods. No chance. Forget manufacturer's claims. They are always bloated.

I'm just going by what I read on some performance website, Hamann's a pretty reputable tuner and a lot of Bimmer owners trust them. Obviously you must not have looked at the picture in my sig, or ask the guys on this board that I've met in person whether I own an M5 or not. Go play in your sandbox.

You will only get 567HP with those upgreades and moded E55 will spank M6 which stock to sotck is even faster then M5 up to 140 rolling starts and till 160 from dead stop....beleive ME my friend has Hamann M6 which has exactly same upgrades...
Without LC he does stand any chance...but rolling start he start to pull hard on ME after 140 !!!

Dont worry whats a 100hp between friends ?
I cannot see anywhere close to 640hp without some F/I or NOS.
550hp sounds about right with ecu / headers etc etc ... around 10% gain.

I picked up about 11% peak rwhp with the same mods on my C5 Z06 - from 352 to 392 rwhp. So 560 hp is not unreasonable for an M5. If the ecu allows more "quality" revs, then it could be a bit more. But I am pretty sure the power curve starts dropping at redline anyway on that motor, so more rev's won't give you more peak power. Only way to really change that is with a new cam.
Anyway, 50 ponies is a nice number.

Since he's an M5 owner and a lover obviously, here's a little treat for him! There's only one thing that ticks me off about the E60... and thats the electronics taking over the driving pleasure! I really did enjoy my E39!
This is a friends car that I had the pleasure of driving the other day, and i mean "really" driving! Damn the SMG though!!

Very nice car, I love it blacked out but I can't say I'm a fan of the wheels. There are a number of ways to make the electronic nannies on the M5 go away, and basically turn it into a teutonic rocket sled of doom, but you need to wade through about 50+ menus (exaggeration) to get to them, and eventually you can program it all into one lovely M button. Now every time I feel like hurting my license I can turn off the traction control, set the SMG to self-destructing 80 millisecond shifts, the diff to lock-and-rock, and the suspension to rigor mortis stiff, its a beautiful thing.

I just traded my M5 for an E63 ... they are so close in 1/4 times it's negligible. Whoever posted earlier about 640hp in the M5 with those mods was mistaken. Maybe 30-40 extra hp tops as a few others have said. The E63 is a much better all around daily driver, no question about it. The only thing to really worry about is that supposedly Dinan is coming out with a stroker motor package that will realistically bring the M5 to 600+ hp. It's gonna cost a ****load though!

I had all sorts of SMG and other problems. They had already replaced the transmission once, and lately it started exhibiting the same problems again and I knew it was only a matter of time. The car had left me stranded numerous times because it wouldn't start, and I just can't put up with that in a brand new 90k car. To make matters worse BMW has no clue what's wrong with the trannies so there is no solution in sight. I had other problems with the car too but that was the big one.
Even if it wasn't for that I probably would have traded it in for the E63 anyway. The M5 is just too "raw" for a daily driver in my opinion. Even in "comfort" mode the shifts are not smooth, the suspension is not soft enough, the rear end clunks like crazy, etc. If you drive 10/10s everywhere you go then yeah the M5 is a great driver's car, but I don't and I was getting really sick of all the annoyances the rest of the 98% of the time. When I'm cruising around, picking up a client, going out to dinner, etc. that crap just doesn't fly. I dunno maybe I'm getting old lol ...

2005 Brilliant Silver E55
Bob. Dinan 3.91 Diff is the best bang for the buck! I love the new diff in my M6, car feels different now...70+ against a stock M5, by 120 I was about to rear end him. I asked if he was really on it, and he said he was. Not sure if the Diff made THAT much of a difference or if BMW lied about the M6 specs.
The Black M5 looks awesome, but too bad the AC wheels kinda messed up the look. I'm gonna guess that the wheels were chosen since the aero kit all seems to be AC

Here's my thoughts:
The front aero kit on the black M5 in Bahrain is RDSport, the rear fin on the trunk deck lid is AC.
The HP gain from headers, full exhaust, charcoal filter removal, and ecu is no more than roughly 50-60 hp.
You can add Kellener (Schrick) cams for additional HP to push the M5 E60 to near 600 hp.
The HP does not drop off in the M5 right at redline. In fact, there is additional room to bump the limiter and gain more HP, but you risk voiding the warranty. The redline setting is visible (detectable) by the dealer unfortunately. The engine is tested to 9k rpms.
I've driven the E63 and now own the M5 E60 and all I can tell you is the M5 is wicked sick fast (and faster than the E63). I took RayJ (from this board) for a ride today at lunch and he about threw up and said this car would definitely beat his E55 (unmodded).
I'm not trying to stir up a hornets nest, but I just noticed this thread and thought I'd share a bit of my research from when I deciding on whether to buy this car or not.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Cheers,
Darren

I know the price of the headers is prohibitive, I mean the stock ones are a work of art and if/when I remove them I'll probably have them mounted, but the performance gains are outright astonishing. With a catback and an ECU you'll be out-running bullet trains.
Did this just turn into M5Board?
