Subwoofer - you don't know what you're missing

After reading several posts, and on a whim, I bought a 10in JL subwoofer and JL 250X1 amp from Ebay. For $300.00, I had it installed in the trunk, in a box, rear facing, without any interference with the spare tire opening.

The sound is incredible! With the HK stereo, everything "feels" like a concert. I can't believe I had my car for so long and did not do this sooner. Besides LSD, this was the best improvement over the factory set up for me.

I have a Polk Audio (MOMO edition) 10" sitting in my garage. Did you not need an extra amp, etc to run it? I think I'll add that to mine soon. The OEM speakers will go as well. I have some MB Quart tweeds waiting to fill the holes.

You got me motivated. Time to get it done!!

POST PICS!!!! Did you install or have it done?

Sorry didn't pay attention to the amp. How much power? I have a 200watt Kenwood sitting, two that can go single.

Yeah, I had my car for a while without a sub and you don't realize how much it helps until you install one. I just installed an Elemental Designs 12 in the rear and can't imagine listening to music without it!! You can't match the bottom end of a good sub. Now I don't have to pump so much bass thru the MB Quart components, I just let the sub take care of it.

Is it relatively easy to upgrade the stock speakers and add a sub in these cars? Are the stock speaker sizes pretty standard? I've got an E63 if it matters. I'm not looking forward to taking the car to the local audio place and I don't know of any "high end" places around here so I'm thinking of doing it myself. I was an installer in high school and while that was a looong time ago I think I can probably tackle an upgrade eh? Thanks!

Easy to do

The subwoofer and amp is essentially plug and play. All they needed was a hi - low adapter and everything went in to accompany stock. I still have the rear deck mounted bass speaker working and the sub just adds the missing piece. The sub is linked to the master volume control and you hear it or don't depending on your prefrence.

Most importantly, there is absolutely no distortion or deck rattle or license plate noise whatsoever. Just great music.

I have foam weather stripping around the back of the license plate and between the plate & frame and it still rattles. The rear deck and sun shade rattle even with a bunch of Dynamat. I took the trim piece out from the top of the rear deck, that helps a lot. I still get rattling at certain bass frequencies with hip-hop but I'm not a big fan of that anyways. When the rear headrests are down, it's cool watching them bounce up & down to the beat in the rear view mirror. 1000 watts is gonna shake things up no matter what you do.

Use thick rubber grommets behind your license plate to stop the rattling. I had to do this on my old Volvo C70 because the system was just too insane. 2,000 watts and 8(!!!) 8" eclipse aluminum subs, including 2 in the doors.
