E63 vs. SL500 (perhaps 55) today

Just got done racing an SL500 (or at least that's what the badge said) with my E63. From a dig, two stop lights in a row. This guy stayed right with me until about 70 miles per hour. After 70 I pulled away several car lengths. The car looked new and still had dealer paper plates. Do you think this would have been the results if it were a year or two old SL55 (with an SL500 badge)? I was shocked to say the least as I thought it was funny when he wanted to race. Well I'm sure he got a laugh at my surprise.

Could've been an SL55, or did it only have 2 exhausts?

It can't have been a 500, unless you weren't trying all out. With more than a 200bhp advantage the E63 is not gonna need to reach 70 before it starts walking a 500.

Sounds like it was either a ringer or this thread is simply an attempt to reignite the tired and old "slow E63" debate.

i realy dont think the badges where switched. cuzz anyone that knows a AMG would know he was tryin to trick people. who knows maybe he had some mods on his car or maybe they are that close to the 63?

I’m certainly not trying to re-start the slow E63 debate as I own one. I’m sure some of you have run into a sleeper being something it’s not and I thought you would like the tale. It only had two exhausts, so the person would have had to change to the SL500 stock exhaust to try and pull of the trick. Probably not likely. I like the idea of the supercharger. Can you produce enough HP to keep up with a 63 by adding a supercharger to the SL500 motor?

Kleemann can turn the already powerful 5.0 Litre V8 into a real animal. But the Kleemannized motor would still have plenty of steam at 70 mph. Could have been an SL550 badged as a 500. Since in Europe the model is still an SL500, and these cars are imported, a simple misbadging does not sound very farfetched.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But I believe that MB states the 0-60 times of the SL550 at 5.4 seconds and the E63 at 4.3 seconds. It should not have been close if it were an SL550. Anyway, it was a fun day as I just got 1,000 miles on the car and it was great running the car all out.

Yes, a supercharged SL500 will be about as fast as an SL55. HPS version is the cheapest, at around 8,500$ so its definitely possible. I don't think it was an SL550 because that car will only manage 5 flat to 60, maybe 4.8 at best.

I have only seen people up-badge their rides from non AMG to the "55" AMG, but not vice versa. At the minimum people de-badge their 55/63's to be stealth. Not that this is the case, but just not common from what I have seen so far in my area.

I have also yet to see any form of downbadging ... I've certainly seen debadging ...

I believe it was tested at 4.9 seconds to 60, half a second quicker than the conservative MB ratings. On the road, the car keeping up until 70 is pretty realistic.

a sl550 will get to 60 in 4.8, at best.
its possible that a slow (not broken in, bad launch, bad reaction etc...) e63 will do around the same time. reaction is everything, 1 second to 70 is a huge chunk of time to give to many cars. a regular sl500 w/ a 1 second head start will do 60 in about 5 seconds. i say he got a better launch or had a better reaction time from the light.

Maybe you were mistaken and it was a SL600? On the quick glance from behind the badging is easily mistaken.

If you did not hear the machinegun fire sound of the 55K then it was not a s/charged SL. Its an unmistakable sound... especially on the SL.

My bet is its a new 550. I doubt someone would slap an a/market S/C on a dealer plated new car. That 550 motor is quite the party trick.

I have no comment on the performance relative to the E63, other than to say the SL puts its power down much more effiiciently than the E's.

BTW what heads does the 550 have ? 4 valve/cyl ? Could be a nice fit to our 55K's instead of modding our stock heads ?

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
I believe it's an all new motor. 55 and the 550 have slightly different displacements. 55 has a single overhead cam and the 550 has continuously variable dual ohc.
I think it would be a mighty task to merge the two. Mind you I havent seen the layouts of the motors but that's my take.

I would think in terms of cost savings etc they would probably try and change as little as possible from one engine to the other. No massive gains in re-engineering the block I would think. So maybe the made the new block similar to the old one (if not the same) and only tinker with the heads... bolt patterns etc should therefore be the same ... but the combustion chamber shape / size is a whole new ball game as will be the VVT... I wonder if the VVT is hydraulicly activated or electronically ... if it is hydraulic it could be an easier mod and would give massive gains on top end...

Can you imagine a 55k with 4v/cyl heads AND VVT ....? Ferk!
