HP Ratings
A friend who owns a M5 says that BMW rates thier HP at the rear wheels whiles Mercedes rates thiers at the crank. Any truth to this?

I thought everyone rated theirs at the crank?
Isn't the M5 rated at 507hp, if that's rwhp, then that / .85 = crank right?
That's a 595hp car... vs the 493 -- lets say 510 because everyone knows Mercedes underrates -- so that means the M5, which is a much newer car than the E55, and has almost 100hp more, still can't whoop it's ***.
Ha, in your face BMW.

No, he's wrong. Every single mfg. rates crank horsepower, never RWHP. This allows the overly optimistic mfg. to exaggerate their ratings with no consequences. You simply cannot afford to remove the motor, place it on an engine dyno, and refute the power claim. To do so would void the factory warranty and they still can claim variances in exhaust, intake, etc.

true, but with the new SAE standards, car makers can't "exaggerate" their claims anymore....

They can and still do. The E63 DOES NOT make 507 HP. The SAE ratings are a help, but there still is no way to be sure how much power a motor is making without removing it from the car and placing it on an engine dyno. The SAE standard merely requires the mfgs. to use a standard way of measuring the power produced.

I should state that this isn't a new M5. I believe it's a
'04-'05 that's been modded. He says it put out 500 rwhp. When I asked was that at the wheel or the crank, that's when he made that statement.

I believe it was an E39, I'm sure you know the difference.

How DO YOU KNOW it does not make 507HP????....maybe we should alert the enginers to that.........!!!!! I really don't know how much HP it makes, didn't take it to a dyno or anything like that, all I know that it feels fast ( butt dyno ) to me and I can still get a nice ticket for speeding. We all have cars that are not only fast, but good looking....I am thankful for what I have..!!

If you have an 18% hp loss due to the drive train you would have a chassis dyno of 415 hp right? It seems as though the dyno run on the cls63 is right in-line with the hp claims if you assume an 18% loss. If I’m looking at the numbers wrong please tell me how it’s calculated.
