Anyone challenge the ecu speed limit?
I had mentioned before that I had hit 160 on the E, but that was under full acceleration. I always knew (heard from Rob Allen) that the limiter is set to kick in, so you can actually go more than 155 if you accelerate through it. I figured that is why i hit 160 and still no cut off.
So, I'm out last night *on my private race track* and I creep up to see what the cut off feels like. I get to 150, no biggy. I hold it there a sec and start to creep....155, 156.....I hold it there and creep again....157, 158....run out of "track". So I never hit the cut off again!!
Does anyone have experience hitting it? What speed does it really come on at? Also, what does it feel like? Is it smooth? Just curious.

LOL at the Cayman. That is just a funny car to me. I won't say under powered, as i get slapped silly when i call a car underpowered since life is relative.
That's actually another thing I wondered. i was going by the digital readout on the dash. I wonder if my speedo is really calibrated right? was I really going 160 when it said it?

Never hit the limit in the '06, but my blown W210 ran HARD up to 150, then started slowing down as if I was backing out of the throttle and stopped at an indicated 156. That was it. It only took about half the pedal to maintain it, but didn't budge 1 mph as I increased throttle. It just acted is if it was already on the floor and would not go faster. No cut off like a GM car or truck, no jerking, no nothing. It just would not go any faster no matter how hard I was accelerating up to 155. It just slarted slowing as I passed 150 like I backed out of it. My E430 was exactly the same, but the limit was 130 mph. I think the differences between cars are speedo calibration, but the limit in the '02 was almost exactly 155 mph like the factory says. That was with stock Monoblocks and 285's on the rear, so maybe wheel/tire changes affect other cars?

So, it sounds like the injectors may back off, instead a full on shut down of any cylinders? I would hate to hate that limit laid up in a turn and have the thing start bucking!!

I suffer from "premature limitation" at 143, but at least it is a smooth engagement.
It seems to be a soft-touch style limiter. No bucking, no "wall", just the inability to gather velocity further.

Last year when I purchased my E it was limited to 156 as indicated on the speedo. It was as described, not able to gain mph, even down a slight grade. When I upgraded to the Renntech ECU/pulley, I was able to hit an indicated 193. The Renntech literature say it should be 189 or thereabouts. Gas mileage at this speed is horrible!!

First off, it appears to me that the speedo is very accurate. As indicated below in the "Max Speed" field, my GPS indicated speed was 157. The speedo indicated 158 at the same time.
Second, the speed limiter begins the limiting process at 156 and holds the speed at 158. The transmission is in 4th gear when the limiter kicks in and then shifts to 5th when the speed hits 158. No matter how rapidly the car is accelerating at that time, it never hits 159.

I'm positive it does. I've seen 160 on mine and wasa rider in one that hit 163 on one at the AMG Challenge in Fontana. The point was that all these times were with the car in full acceleration from about 60mph. I even had lengthy discussions with AMG at the time. My only question for this thread was where does it cut out if you do not accelerate through it.

ECU restriction cancellation
Maybe many people know this, but at the giantic MB dealership/museum in London, they have their own track and if you're nice the tech's can apparently punch in a couple of codes and remove the restriction and let you out on the track. I don't know if they'll remove it permenantly but it would be nice to see the real power of AMG's.
