MP Designs Steering Wheels. Buyer Beware.

I have had an MP Designs Steering wheel for 2 years and now have developed 2 cracks in the finish. One was small on the bottom which occured about 3 months after I got it. I blew it off because it was small and diidn't want to take the trouble to send it back. The second however is on the top and very noticable because you can feel it.

I talked to the distributor about repair, not under warranty but for cash but they were no help whatsoever.

I thought that MP Designs was a quality product but if they don't hold up more than a year or 2 I am very hesitant to recommend it. It's probably better to pay a bit more and get one through the stealership, at least you'll get a product which will last thru a 4 year lease.

BUYER BEWARE.

Needless to say I am p o'd. I just felt like you all should know of bad experiences with parts suggested on this forum.

Who is the vendor?

I'm not so sure MP Designs let you down. I got mine through Neal, and his customer service has been great.

The vendor for MP Designs that I bought it thru is no longer in business. The current US distributor is Performance Products and that's who I talked to. I emailed MP Desgns in Germany twice with no response either time.

A member here had that same thing happen with his wheel and he was able to get a new wheel at no cost. He I think bought it for that same place that is now gone from the business world yet he got MP to honor the warranty and replace it free of cost.

If you park in the sun often these wood wheels crack. The good thing about the factory version is that you get a 4 year warranty -- but theirs crack as well. The factory does not have a wood wheel for the AMG line so you really are out of luck on that front. The stealership will just sell you the MP wheel for more than anyone else -- and wont honor any warranty.

Sorry for the head ache but keep trying with performance and see if they cant give you the needed contact info at MP.

Contact Neal at Euroteck (sponsor) to see what he can do. I would buy everything from him if he were closer.

FYI, MP Design Makes some Mercedes-Benz OEM wood parts. So if this can crack, so can the stock wood.

What would you prefer -- wood or all leather? The stocker is so skinny I feel like I am going to pull it off one day by accident.

With the MP Design wheel, they only make an all leather wheel for the regular E-Class. Not the E55. So you will not have the buttons on the back. They say they make the all leather with buttons in germany but do not import them to the US. I think Brabus has an all leather wheel for the E55. Not 100% certain though.

So far as i can determine, no one has any 63 MP Design wheels in stack. I have had one on order since early November and can't get a firm arrival date from the dealer (Performance Products).

Hey, you sure that this one (3rd wheel - all leather) does not work with the shifters? I am assuming that Sports Tip = shifters still work? The top 2 are wood and non-tip. I am thinking all leather would be better since it would not crack, but if it doesn't retain the finger shifters on the back of the steering wheel then no dice for me.

Fits Applications:
E55 ALL 2003-06 (SPORTS TIPTRONIC)

Charcoal Leather (No Wood)

Not sure which one you are talking about, but I've never seen an all leather one with the shifters. If you want that, why not get the AMG one through MBenzNL? It is pretty aggressive as well, with Alcantra and leather.

Yes I do mean one jus like that, but the one I saw had the + and - signs in the front as well, which can also be added (I found out after the fact). My MP designs one came oddly placed, and I found out it is easy to fix.

I see what you mean. Performance products website is very unclear on things. So i cannot really comment on if its true or not. I just remember MP Design told me a few months ago they are not importing the all leather version FOR the E55 with buttons here. Possibly it changed, but i don't think so. I have a feeling their website is just wrong.

Jeez, that is ugly. You should contact someone at MP Designs AND put in a complaint against performance.
