e63 Pinging loudly

With almost 6k miles on my e63, it's started to ping pretty badly under acceleration at lower rpms. It's just a momentary thing, right as I hit the gas, but it is pretty loud, and I imagine I'm suffering some performance loss there as well.

Any advice/input before I run it over to the dealer?

Thanks!

ummm...if detonation is loud enough for your to hear, then yes it's REALLY bad not to mention it's on a new car. Bring it into the dealers....I find this a bit hard to believe though, perhaps you're hearing something else?

Sounds like a bad batch of fuel......

The dealer should be able to figure that one out fairly quickly.

Dump a thing of Techron in it with premium Chevron gas... if that doesnt do it, have the dealer take a look. good luck

I took it to the dealer this morning, and took it on a road test with a 'team leader' so I could replicate the sound. He heard it, and said it could either just be some bad gas (I only use 'name brand' 91, but who knows what gets in there), or a problem with the timing.
Anwyay, they kept the car for the day and it sounds like they did an ECU update. They called this afternoon to tell me it was ready- I'll pick it up in the AM.
Hopefully it won't feel like they took the Tiger out of my tank- All those ECU reflash horror stories have me worried...

I'll keep you updated!

It will be interesting to know how this could happen. I think the knock sensors went awol ...

Am I right in saying the system will advance timing until knocking is detected and retard it a fraction from this point - and do this a gazzilion times a second ?

If no knocking is detected (i.e. faulty sensor / ecu) ignition will advance to a max ... and "ping" .... There should be additional fail safes though if this were the case I would have thought.

Certainly sounds quite extreme for it to be only due to bad fuel ...

The US Octane rating is diff - in UK it this the RON (or research octane numer). In the US its avg between the RON and the MON (Motor Octane Number) aka as PON (Pump Octane Number). RON is always higher than MON by around 8 to 10pts.

So US PON of 91 is equal to around a RON of 95ish...

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Yeah the BP 102 at £2.25 (circa $4.40) odd per liter is - well outrageous! And I was a fool enuf to try it ... needless to say no noticable difference ...

Only use Shell Optimax in the beast tho...

There is a recall for the E63 is for a belt tensioner making a pinging noise in engine area on acelleration-maybe mention that to them- they should know though

That's the thing, these modern ecus are plenty smart enough to retard the ignition timings and control the air fue ratio properly when something like bad gas enters the tank....you'd just suffer performance. And if the knock sensor went haywire, his car would do just that, dump more fuel and try to retard timing...but he's claiming he actually "heard" pinging on a brand new car....only time you can hear detonation by ear is if it's really extreme....that's actually what the knock sensor is for. So a bad tank of gas doesn't seem plausible I think....unless MB ecus aren't as sophiscated compared to all other modern ecus then I learned something today.

This was four years ago and the OP hasn't been on the boards since June of 2007.

You might want to start a new thread, or search around for something more current.
