I use the aux in the glove compartment and it works great. You get to use the steering controls and read your playlist right off the dash. What more could you want. The only compliant I have with this is the volume setting. You can't get full volume off the aux set up for some reason. Did anyone ever find a fix for that?

It depends on how long your trips are and how often you use it. When I tried to get it, the cost installed was about $700. The dealer took my car apart without realizing that the part they had was not for the E-class.
Since then, I bought an ipod car charger, and an auxiliary plug. I keep my ipod in the raised cupholder and just control it with my finger. Total cost - about $50.
My wife has the ipod kit in her GL450 and doesn't get to use it because the kids will only let her listen to the Disney station on the Sat. I have used it from time to time and note that you need to turn the unit off manually in the glovebox.

I couldn't agree more...I love having the ipod set up in the car but the volume thing is killing me...would definitely pay up to solve this problem.

Worth it! In case you like music, you can hear your own music in the ipod with steering wheel control.I have ipod integration kit by STEVE and works perfect! ANd cheaper than your dealer.
Get it! Never mind.

If you're happy just listening to a particular play list or artist and don't need or want to adjust things on the fly, you really don't need it. I never know what I'm going to want to listen to when I hit the road and even then often change my mind a few times. I really like being able to change songs, artists, or playlists on the fly with the steering wheel controls. The volume thing is annoying. I was driving about 75 the other day on the freeway with the sunroof open and had trouble hearing my tunes. I think you have the same problem though if you go through the AUX jack without the kit. I can't check because once you have the kit, the AUX jack is disabled.

I've been through this before - nearly pulled the car apart looking for the input - its not there! 2003s with COMAND don't have the auxillary input in the glove compartment - newer models do.
My cheap-*** solution was to burn an mp3 DVD and use that - search how to do it or have the ipod kit installed.

Did a search and nothing popped up. would you please give us more details? are you referring to ripping your MP3's onto a DVD (for obvious mass storage) and then playing the DVD in the car's CD player??? I think my brain hurts now!

LOL!!! Here is the deal:
The '03 does not have the auxillary input. BUT, the single CD player in it does indeed see DVDs. Note: The player in the dash does NOT play or see VIDEO. But, you can burn it full of MP3s and see it. That feature fell off sometime by the '06s (I hear). I have actually never tried listening to my burned MP3s onto DVD in the '06, but I used it all the time on my older ones. Also, on my '04 and newer, the Command also showed te song name, etc., so using the DVD was a real option.
It all ocmes down to how you listen to your music. If all your **** is on an iPOD, then it is simle to get the kit. If you just want a way to get more than 6 CDs worth of music in your car, then the DVD is an option.
Hope that helps.

I don't use iTUNES much (just to get my wife's iPOD done). Even if it does not work the first round, don't give up. It has been a few years since I did it, but I vaguely remember something about the way that the mp3s get burned. ISO or something? I don't know enough baout computers to know. What worked for me was simply burning them using MS XP Pro and NO other software.

***** outta luck! I've tried burning it on 3 different DVD's as data and MP3. The head-unit will not even recognize that a CD/DVD has been inserted in it! Just to clarify the radio is on... I insert the DVD... the radio is still on!! I hit the CD button and the screen says: insert CD! It might have something to do with the brand of DVD (that's my next door neighbor's 2 cents).
irooni??? but of course!

try this thread https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/137531-aux-input-comand.html
you may have to enable mp3 playback via the 'engineers menu' or get a software upgrade to play mp3 DVDs.
You need to burn the DVD at 2X speed and use a high quality dvd for it to work. I used DVD R-. try playing a commercial DVD in the slot first to see if the software needs upgrading/enabling.
you may need to search the w211 forums for more details.
