Good luck, you might check Kelly Bluebook on your ride. Buyers will be looking to pay somewhat less than your asking price.

Al, So, you have a new ZO6, a CLS 55, and you are getting a CL63? That is some kind of nice stable you have there. Are you going to drive the CLS or the CL? Let me know when it comes in. I would love to see it. What color are you getting?

I concur ... auctions, which arent the same as private sales are showing these numbers on 2005's. I use this as reference and not as a bible but they pretty much dictate the market IMO. Mileage does affect the sale but not as much as your asking price seeing that an "above" flint gray with only 7k went for 56k. Any "above" car at an auction sale is truly clean. Good luck with the sale, looks like you have a nice ride.

I'd respectfully disagree.... MMR does not know the condition of the car. It just makes the assumption that the buyers are not stupid, thus, assumes the higher priced car is "above", and the lower priced car is "below". To me it's useless.

Oh, plus, auctioned cars have typically worse conditions than the ones on big dealers' lots as auctions are usually dealers' last resort. So the logic is obvious... can't sell the car, throw it to auction.

hmmm the cars are all conditioned in advance. If you have access to Manheim you will see that all cars presale are rated from 1 to 5 with 3 pulling average and anything above that bumping the rating to above. What would be the purpose of putting the ratings in if it didnt mean anything. My access to Manheim is not public nor is it to any of my dealers. I have seen many below average cars at SCAA, Riverside, Cade, etc and they do mean something (average is better than below). These are my findings and yours might differ.

As for your statement about cars being sold at auctions are dealers last resort is not valid at least here in California as primarily all purchases of auction cars are dealers that then put them on their lots to sell. Yes some dealers may take in cars that dont belong on their lots but the cars do belong on others. Most of my big BMW and Benz stores buy bank lease returns at the auction and even dealer sales. The factory sales dont provide poor products for the most part unless they are lemons.

If you have access to the MMR on Manheim you can see most of the cars pre sale with pictures, ratings, and the inspectors comments. I have 210 clients who use this site and buy cars all over the US. The ratings do serve a purpose for future considerations in their opinion, yours may differ respectfully of course.

Yes, I know auctions give stars to the cars sold... but I don't think it goes to the system. If you go to Manheim website, you cannot search cars by its rating... an inspector's report seems to be offline.

Put it this way, don't you think there should be some occassions when "above" cars got sold lower than "average" cars and "average" cars got sold lower than "below" cars? May not be a lot... and may not happen in one auction at one time... but IMO it happens from time to time.

And now take a look at MMR... At any given point in time, Min. "above" price is always higher than Max. "average" price; and Min. "average" price is always higher than max. "below" price. It's too good to be true, don't you think?

But either way, since the buyers should be well informed (since they're in car business), it is very fair and safe assumption to show the rating in relation to the price sold. The condition assessment shown in MMR may be inaccurate for cars whose prices are in the margin.

As for the auction as the last resort, I may have too generalized it... I should say on average... yes, you could still find gem cars at auctions... but on average, the auctioned cars are typically in worse conditions as it's the nature of human being - keep the good ones himself. Of course, this may not be true all the time... especially condition assessment is very subjective and relative.

Back to topic... OP, good luck on your sale. I myself am in the position of self denial The market price seems to be lower than what we think the car is worth. I still put the car for sale but w/ almost no motivation to sell...

FYI, check around the forum... and check avg. ads' prices. You'll see that members get '05 for less... just recently, a member (gthang - I think) bought a quite loaded, 10K, CPO '05 from a dealer. You could ask how much he paid... there are a lot of other members also who bought '05, including myself.

I got 16K designo '05 w/ all options except distronic and that darn rear sunshade for a lot less than that... granted, it was not CPO (the dealer told me the car was CPO'd and got cancelled b/c they - non-MB dealer - bought the car ) but it is designo and possibly has more options than yours.

Posting detailed pictures would also help.

I think you may be mixing public and private auctions in your assumption. I managed the back end of an auto lender and I used 4 auctions to sell my cars to dealers only (no public auctions) .. the choice for lease returns or even repo's (yikes) is generally sell it on a lot, private (dealer) auction or public auction.

Public auctions are too much of a crap shoot for large lenders (way too many hassels and price fluctuations) and maintaining your own lot is a big committment .. so dealers get to pick the best of lease returns at a discount to sell on their lots .. the large majority of these cars will never see public auction.

That said, I personally would never buy from a pub. auction, left overs & high risk cars .. and the only people who can buy at the prices listed here are those wiht dealer creditials .. so the price range is accurate for dealers, obviously add a few thousand for public consumption.

As for car ratings .. they may or may not be searchable with certain access levels in the auctions site .. but the ratings are real and based on the condition of the cars .. there are generally 3 people who rate them, the seller (my auctioner rated all my cars before they hit the block, how else can you know what to expect?), auction itself and the buyer who almost always inspects the cars prior to bidding.

No one of the three likes to depend on the others rating so we all do our own inspections .. but in my experience the auction rating is as accurate as any.

Just my .02 cents!!

OK... I respect your opinions.... but no, I'm not mixing w/ public auctions. What Vic and I argued is MMR (Manheim Market Report) rating, which Vic copied and pasted above. We did not argue about the actual rating at the auction (1-5 stars) or condition report. I 100% agree they are accurate.

Here's my proof - 2005 Honda Accord LX 4D Auto (just to get the one w/ a lot of data points) from Manheim auctions all over the country.

>>>> MIN. "ABOVE" PRICE > MAX. "AVERAGE" PRICE <<<<
>>>> MIN. "AVERAGE" PRICE > MAX. "BELOW PRICE <<<<

Now... do you think it's coincidental that NONE of "above" condition cars never got sold below the HIGHEST price of "average" condition cars? To me, the answer is NO.

I must state once again that the buyers, in this case dealers, are well informed. This means the price at Manheim auctions has a lot higher correlation w/ the conditions & mileage than the one at B2C or C2C transactions. So it is still safe to use the MMR rating... but be sure not to use it literally.

Sorry to argue.... it's fun sometimes to argue....

Only time the dealer auctions come into play is when your trading a car in.The average Joe off the street is going to use KBB,autotrader, nada etc for his idea of a fair price to pay or sell at.

I dont see why these auction prices are even brought up unless a guy is asking questions reguarding a trade in deal.Yes this car might be on the high side but if he wants he can always negotiate his price.Thats how its always been done, right? The vast majority of people wont ever see the inside of a high end auction.
