Unhappy Should I be able to peel out at will ?

Trying to figure out if I have a pump problem. It feels like I have a lot of power. But driving around the neighborhood I can't peel out at various stops...but enough power to fishtail it. I have RA1s and it's hot out.???

You definitely have a problem. Most likely a failing pump. You should be able to shred the tires with no effort (assuming traction control is off). You out to have enough torque and power off idle to scare you, or something is wrong.

Mine gradually lost power until it became extremely obvious that I had no power. Yes, the pump. Fixed and I now am back to having incredible power at all RPMS, able to light up the tires at will. If your car isn't producing enough power to scare you, take her in

Haven't heard that term in 20 years !! But it used to mean spinning the tires and burning rubber from a stop...but if he is fishtailing and not peeling out I'm not sure exactly what it means.

Four things -

1.
The post about torque management: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/195306-torque-management-dyno-mode-q-s.html

I'm convinced that the ECU in my CL55 will override if one tries to floor it from a dead stop. It's as if it predicts that my torque demand is greater than what the tires can handle. But then if I only let it roll about a foot and jump on the throttle only part way it will light the tires up (even with ESP on). Half throttle is probably where they are getting roasted.

2. Your intercooler pump might be bad.

3. If your lock-up torque convertor is sticking, these cars won't light up the tires (even with 500+ of torque). Voice of experience on that one. If the car starts to buck and stall when you come to a stop, the lock-up is screwing up.

4. Somewhat related to 3, the torque convertor lock-up is more aggressive in manual (M) mode than sport (S). So, it is easier to roast the tires in S than it is in M. In M, the lock-up can begin to happen before you get the full benefit of the torque multiplication at the stall speed.

From a dead stop and ESP off, I've had to get out of it before I ended up into a curb, and I do know how to drive to keep it straight. If you don't have traction problems with ESP off, all is not well.

I think it's 1. above in my case and had that very thought last night. I tested it briefly this a.m. by moderately depressing the pedal and it ripped one off. I'm going to keep testing that to see if it fails as an explanation. I also have the sprintbooster which could be a factor combined with 1. Plenty of power from the roll; it was just flooring it from a stop that it acted like it was in 2nd

I agree. it is a 5 minute install. I'm running R rated 295s now, and I still have to be cognizant of the take off. It doesn't spin out nearly as bad as with the stock tires, but it will definitely smoke them if all you do is flat out floor it. Oh yeah, I also have a sprint booster and I'm still killing the tires.

Jangy, your 55 is LOW. See you've fitted new wheels. 19s?

isnt fishtailing = peeling out? unless your method of fishtailing is turning the streering wheel and flooring the gas. that would be doing donuts in my book

Peeling out means lighting up your tires, generally when turning from a stop after leaving somewhere.

Fishtailing is when the back end "wiggles" but the car does not complete a full revolution like with a donut.

My car is a peel out monster with stick and the ability to turn off the electronic nannies.. Overcome the ESP and 516lb/ft will make a bonfire.

Nah, stayed with 18s. I love the 295s in the rear.

Peeling out is leaving some nice tire marks on dry pavement. A quick spin and chirp does not count.

On a nice humid and hot day, my car doesn't even chirp the rear tires.

Please do sympathize with my suffering.

To me that is a burn out, a peel out is usually a short little spin of the tires, but I guess it means different things everywhere.
My car is slow and I know that

Took it in to RBM and I must have said "intercooler water pump" 10 times to make sure they got the message. They found some codes and now they're replacing, whew !
Service adviser said no customer has reported too little power to him before for these cars, and I said well I like to turn off the ESP once in a while.

'Course I ran over the sprintbooster I left on the garage floor like a bonehead but I'm not sure I was going to reinstall anywat
