Reflash
I have talked to service reps at two dealerships. Both tell me this is the way it is supposed to be (starting in 2 in S mode). They all agree it doesn't make sense. One has said if I can get the # of the reflash, he will try to do it for me. If you can get it, or the name of the dealership that would be great.

Tell your dealers/service reps that they are stupid. I also live in SC and the delaership in Columbia, SC flashed mine 3 weeks ago. The car is much more lively. I commented on this when it was done. I also put in the SprintBooster so now it is amazing. Call Dick Dyer Mercedes in Columbia and asked for the service manager re: E63 engine software update. They should be able to help you. My car was a Sept '06 DELIVERY so it was probably made August or July. Anyway, for all you guys, my car now ALWAYS starts in 1st gear in sport mode. It would always start in 2nd before until the engine warmed up or was driven aggressively. Hope this helps.

I have a copy of the work order from juicee63 and BlkE63AMG got his car done at the same dealership I got mine, but they have not heard of it. They are willing to try. Both have shown me a print-out from Mercedes where this is normal. Maybe with more information they can figure it out.
