63 owners- wierd transmission clunk

I am amlost ready to pull the trigger on a new e 63 but every test drive i take with different cars seems to make a loud clunk when it downshifts to 1st gear. is this normal on the car. You can really feel the clunk and it seems like something wrong. Dealer says its normal, any feedback would be great

The car tends to make a bit of a thump when shifting into first as you roll up to a stop sign etc. That is normal and it is greatly improved over the first generation 7g trannies. The first ones felt more like getting rear ended than a thump. Now MB has the car start in second unless you make a COMPLETE stop and thereby it eliminates some of the thumping. When the car does still engage first you can feel it even if stopped.

Its not really that bad and I would wish the car could always start in first for performance reasons but mashing your foot to the floor will still induce a first gear start (but with a very slight delay).

Its actually fairly difficult for an auto tranny to smoothly engage first gear unless you have a very very heavy and non responsive drive line to "smooth" it out.

If you really don't like that bit of a thump I would advise looking for a different car as MB wont really be able to resolve it. Some may say it can be reduce or fixed but personally I have yet to see it totally vanish. Its kind of the nature of the 7g tranny. But I think its hardly a reason not to look at the 63's as a viable car to own and enjoy.

Not anything that will bug you when you get the car. I like it, gives the car a manual feel. If you want to really feel something, punch the hell out of it when it first slips into first and feel the awesome release of power.

Thats the thing exactly. It is a very minor item and most do not notice it at all. If you dont notice it great but it still makes a slight thump as it engages first gear. I dont consider it an issue at all as mechanical things well make slight sounds and vibrations in use. Cant hide from that.

There has been a TSB out to address this issue w/ the 7 speed for quite some time now; it's amazing MB is still shipping cars without correcting this

I feel it on occasion, but it is not disruptive. Maybe I'm also used to it, but I haven't had complaints from my passengers.

I've driven several 7gs with the bump, both the slight bump you are talking about and I had a GL450 feel like I got rearended bump. The E63 I drove however had absolutely no bump. I am pretty sensitive to these things.

We got a GL450 in Jan. There is absolutely no thump.

I got a CLS63 in Apr. The car's transmission starts in 1st gear everytime. However, when you begin to slow down to a light, the transmission downshifts as you approach the light. You can feel it. (slight thump). I didn't like it and call the serivce adv. He said it was normally. However, the more I drove it, the smoother the downshifts became. If you drive like a an old lady, you proabably won't feel it after 250 miles of driving. But, then your tranmissions learns to become lazy. I putt putt around town normally. So, every so often, I do the transmission reset, and the car is a fast as fast again. And somehow, maybe I am use to it, the downshifts coming to a light really doesn't feel bad anymore. (Also, setting the transmission to "C" helps according to the service adv)
