63 owners- wierd transmission clunk
Its not really that bad and I would wish the car could always start in first for performance reasons but mashing your foot to the floor will still induce a first gear start (but with a very slight delay).
Its actually fairly difficult for an auto tranny to smoothly engage first gear unless you have a very very heavy and non responsive drive line to "smooth" it out.
If you really don't like that bit of a thump I would advise looking for a different car as MB wont really be able to resolve it. Some may say it can be reduce or fixed but personally I have yet to see it totally vanish. Its kind of the nature of the 7g tranny. But I think its hardly a reason not to look at the 63's as a viable car to own and enjoy.

I've driven several 7gs with the bump, both the slight bump you are talking about and I had a GL450 feel like I got rearended bump. The E63 I drove however had absolutely no bump. I am pretty sensitive to these things.

I got a CLS63 in Apr. The car's transmission starts in 1st gear everytime. However, when you begin to slow down to a light, the transmission downshifts as you approach the light. You can feel it. (slight thump). I didn't like it and call the serivce adv. He said it was normally. However, the more I drove it, the smoother the downshifts became. If you drive like a an old lady, you proabably won't feel it after 250 miles of driving. But, then your tranmissions learns to become lazy. I putt putt around town normally. So, every so often, I do the transmission reset, and the car is a fast as fast again. And somehow, maybe I am use to it, the downshifts coming to a light really doesn't feel bad anymore. (Also, setting the transmission to "C" helps according to the service adv)
