20+ HP to E63

Sorry if this is old news to anyone but my mechanic at Euro MotorCars just recommended that we remove the 2 accordion style air filters that are installed in my E63. According to him they serve no purpose other than to purposely restrict air flow. The air filter housing has 2 built in filters and the accordion style filters are loosely housed in the air intake box. Removing these 2 extra filters greatly enhances air-flow and poses no harm to the vehicle. I just took them out and the vehicle seems much more responsive and peppy. He swears that it adds 20+ HP to the car.

The charcoal filter removal has been posted here and we're not entirely sure that it will add any HP.

Are you talking about the white paper filters? Not sure if I would want to remove those. It's pretty dusty here in Tucson and I don't want all that headed into the engine.

Charcoal Filters Benefits For 63 Engines

If you're talking about the Charcoal filters, then removing them WILL add horsepower. It's just that some members experienced +18 whp and some experienced +2 whp.

But essentially, you will gain some horsepower even if not immediate.

Try a search for "charcoal filter" for more information on installation, instructions, and pictures.

Is removing the charcol filters a bad idea, if you have free flow type filters.

It's fine everywhere. It's just a Cali-inspired emissions thing. Cars in dusty climes such as Spain don't have charcoal filters. I still have mine in and am at 8,000miles. Planning on removing them after my 15k service.

The charcoal filters are to keep unburned gases from exiting the intake system when the engine is off. They are not intended to provide any filtering to the intake air. Removing them will have no detramental effects on the engine.

it will yeidl gains..

but depending on dyno system, temp, humidity.. types of fans use..ect.

I would add the K&N's and remove the charcoal filters immediately after break in period.

I think he is talking about the wrong filters, sounds like he removed the main ones, not the charcoal ones if they were truly white. If I remember correctly, The charcoal ones are small and charcoal colored, not white... removing the main filters is a bad idea unless you replace them with higher flowing ones...

charcoal filters are for eliminating smell right? like our charcoal cabin filters. took mine out and me and my wife noticed a buring plastic type smell after a while. put them back in and its gone now. guess there was a reason for them in my case at least.

Different filters than those in engine bay. As Jon has said..."The charcoal filters are to keep unburned gases from exiting the intake system when the engine is off"

Yea you removed the "charcoal in-cabin" filters, you need to remove the charcoal intake filters to get the extra power.
