Vmax event in UK 7th July
As you may or may not know, there is a Vmax event this Saturday that I stumbled onto from the Alpina/E55 thread...
Its a 2 mile runway from a dig ....
Anyhow I am going along in my ASP E55... and so is my buddy in his SL55 (Wetterauer 600HP). Only mod on my car performance wise is the ASP pulley and 19" wheels with 285 rubber. No cooling, ECU or VRTB installed yet.
I will take my video along and will record as much I can if the blokes and organisers dont mind me filiming their cars and runs .... I am sure I will be able to video my runs with my buddy filiming.
I will certainly be up against an Audi RS6 and hopefully an E63. I will probably run against my friends SL55 as well but not sure how these things are conducted. And yes there will be a B10 and M6 there... I will love to run against either!!!!!
I will also have my Autoengenuity there - should arrive today - to check out how my car and the SL55 look on the data side. Anything other than the IAT's, Timing, MAP, Coolant temp, Fuel flow I should monitor - I am a proper novice on this logger but will try get up to speed before Saturday?
Also should I try a run in dyno mode - or is it too risky?
Anything else you guys want me to check out?
Uhm, BTW here is the list of cars attending
Zonda Roadster
Ford GT
McLaren SLR
Ruf RT12
Ruf BTR
Aston Vanquish
Aston DB9
Aston DB9 Volante
AstonAMV8 Roadster
Lamborghini Gallardo
Ferrari F430
Porsche 997
Porsche 996TT
Porsche 996GT3
Noble
Ultima
Mercedes E63
Audi RS4
Audi RS6
Alpina B10/BMW M6
Kleeman Mercedes SL600
Wetterauer SL55 (unlimited)
ASP E55 (limited )
Ah sorry the point of the event is to get the highest Vmax ... over the 2 mile section ...
Any bets on who will be quickest?

Hey! That's awesome!
Re: dyno mode, I don't see much risk but I also suspect you won't see much difference in top speed, either.
Enjoy!

Yep but is speed limiter still operational ?
And is ABS / braking system still 100%?

I have no doubt I will lose against most of that company!!! But thanks for the good wishes... I will have the car delimited at the track so at least I can run free... lets just hope it does not rain and I get over this flu I have... pronto!

OK not a day for excuses so lets just describe what the deal was...
Track was 1/3 of an oval effectively.... kind of like a candy stick. So the start was from the short end of the candy stick down about 1/3 of a mile to the long right hand corner onto the main straight. The total length was probably 2 miles so the runway section mbe 1.5 miles and the first section 0.5-0.7 miles. Informal start, no timing here just some bloke setting you off 2 at a time with each of you tripping the timing gear at the end of the runway and the speed flashing up on a board. It was up to the guys integrity to record back what their speeds were. I dont know yet if there was any verification going on.
Some guys gassed down the initial section big time - some took it easy to prep for the run onto the runway. If I gassed it here massively I would get to 110/120 or so and have to back off to around 70 for the corner and then nail in onto the runway. So there were a few informal "drag races" down this first section but no timing and only would mess up your run down the runway... I gassed it though !!!
So you know this issue I am having with the clearance of my 285's on the outer fender on max compression? Well tripped traction control in the bend a couple of times with much smoke and concern something else had gone ... anyhow so I had to take this corner a little more gentle than I would have liked and this obviously affected the Vmax achieved but honestly I dont think it was a massive difference. I think I did more damage dragging down the first section getting temps up than the corner did. But both affected the result without doubt - how much I dont know.
I had very little time to prep the datalogger properly but I got some results... IAT's kept rising and rising with speed. I thought they might plateau as the speed increased and the cooling over the H/E improved. Well nope. Max IATs of 205 (very close to shut down) was at my top speed of 172mph ~5900 rpm in 4th. Had 3 runs with same result. Ambients were around 18-20 deg C during the day (~66F), so kind of ideal really with cool breeze down the straight.
The car initally ran 162 with limiter in place (it comes in very gently and scales in from 155-160 it seems).
The other thing I (and my friend in the SL55) noticed was that when changing up at 6500rpm there was a substantial jump in acceleration... both cars were changing up too late and the S/C was parasitic above 5800 rpm it seems. This 175mm pulley is too big for stock heads and no headers setup methinks.
Both cars have the ASP pulley - thats my only mod - no ECU other than the delimit on the day. The SL55 has the full Wett. package and tune to ~580hp. He said he could have gone faster if he was more aggressive in the bend but .... BTW the SL has the same cooling setup as the W220 schematic thats been floating around ... he definitely has a OEM secondary heatexchanger in place.
So yeah bitterly disappointed ... the SL600 is mad ... (Kleeman version) a 65 would have done really well here I think.
So congrats to the blown P-turbo's and the CGT and yes to the M6 and B10 very impressive top ends for stock cars (at least I think they were stock if you can call a B5 stock?, dunno about the M5). Some surprises down the list (e.g. F430, Nobles, Ultima) - thought they would be quicker.
All in all a very rushed day ... 2 hours top get there 3 hours to get back and took forever to get going once we were there, and then d1cking around with the datalogger and my delimit, and we had to leave early, thats what you get with a last min . com arrangements.
I keep wondering if my car would not have done better stock ... with smaller pully less heat maybe would have run better - dunno.
So what did I learn?
1. Fix friggin tyres
2. Get better coolling
2a Bigger cooler pump - mbe twin pumps
2b Bigger / better intercoolers
2c Bigger Heat exchanger/s
3. Think a smaller pulley might be better (e.g. 165-170)
4. Headers with larger primaries
5. Get 2.82 gearing ... 2.65 is wayyyyy too long.
6. Maybe water injection would really help here too with heat.
7. Get a proper ECU tune once cooling is sorted.
Hmmmm ... quite a long list - so maybe just forget it all until the E63TT 09 comes out and give the E55 to the wife? Ah ...there was a ML63 there but dont know what it ran. No E63 arrived that I saw.
Videos? As you can imagine with all the rush and frustration I managed only one video of a walk down the "pit lane" showing off the cars before the event started. I am sure there will be videos posted on line as almost everyone had cameras with them. So give me a break until I get the video posted - it might be a while ....
Have to say the SBC brake failure issue was in the back of my mind as I approached the braking zone ... there was not much of a run off ... I don't know if I will do this again at this event with this braking system - if brakes went at wrong time - I would be playing harps right now.
Sorry guys tried to fly the flag - but lets just say that was a half mast effort at best.

According to the datalogger the engine coolant and IAT's were almost identical... a common coolant volume is no good .... !

So many things to think about?
600 did well eh?
did you have fun?
sounds like the car struggled a bit, sad no 63 to compare to.
Hope you get it sorted, thanks for sharing the data
