Where to start with engine upgrades for an E55

I just bought an E55 and I have read a ton of info regarding perf upgrades. I just don't know where to start, what is the safest, most reliable, and least likely to be detected by a dealer. Any input would be great!!!

Thanks,

B

Hey B,

Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the AMG family.

Here's a quickie list for performance upgrades

a) Pulley (165 mm and 175 mm)

b) ECU upgrade

c) Headers (Long tubes or shorties)

d) 80 mm throttlebody

e) Carbon fiber airbox, python tubes

f) Cooling mod

g) Cams

Your first mod should be a pulley followed by a cooling mod and ECU. With the addition of a pulley, depending on what size, you will see a gain from 40-50 rwhp and 50-80 rtq.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Adam

what are pros and cons between the 165 mm and 175 mm pulley?

175 mm pulley produces more boost which in turn produces more heat. Therefore, your SC has a bigger likelihood of shutting down past 120 mph without any cooling mod.

165 mm pulley produces less boost than the 175 mm and doesn't require a cooling mod. (optional; SC still has a chance to shut down)

We have something in the works.

Stay tune..

If you can't wait, Evosport offers the EVO1 package which is cheaper than Renntech. ASP is also an option.

Here's more information on the cooling mod. What i didn't post is retail pricing

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/200780-renntech-cooling.html

The renntech cooling mod for the E55 is $3495 while the Evosport cooling mod is $3095.

so, the best way to go is the evosport pkg 1 and cooling kit all at once. Power and cooling so that I won't have any issues.

If you are worried about your dealer interferring on your mods, then you either need to find another dealer(mod friendly one)or just forget modding all to gether.

Best way is too do the pulley, ecu, headers,Tb and cooling all at the same time, but that can be a financial burden to some.Understandably too,its not a cheap build.Specially at the prices these tuners get for their stuff.

If you decide to do it a step at a time but within a resonable time frame, then I would do the headers, then Tb,cooling and pulley/ecu last.If you have no sell control and want the most bang for the buck, then do the pulley now and save up for the others.

2004 E55 AMG and 2003 C320 4Matic Miss my 993 Turbo above!!
Modifications

Could someone please chime in and determine in what order modifications can be done without cooling or ECU..........Which modifications do require the EVO cooling system?? Finally, can all of the referred modifications be complete and then tie it all in with a remapped ECU.

I am in the minority here, but , I always tell people to do the pulley & ECU last.

I would do the following must-have's in this order:

- rig stock pump to run w/accessory power
- Headers
- TB
- Quaiffe LSD

These items can be added if you decide to go a bit further:

- Larger carbon airbox & tubes (matching cover is not necessary of course but completes the look)

Lastly:

- Full cooling upgrade
- Pulley & ECU retune

VRUS,

Interesting that you think pulley/ecu last. What is your reasoning? Not questioning, just wondering.

PS - All your products look fantastic! I may start the mod bug late this year! I've got to keep up with all of you.

I totally agree with Victor, except if your going to be pulling the pulleys off install the Extreme belt wrap kit, this will cure a lot of the power drop off at the top end.

Adding the pulley first is only adding to the problem and not letting the pulley do its job completely. You must first free up the air flow through the motor before you try and force more in.get the gasses out, headers. Then open up the intake to smooth out the air flow and give it enoug opeing to breath better, same theory as the headers but opposite end up the pump.Once you have the exhaust and intake opened up and flowing better, then you can focus on spinning the SC faster to pump more air through. The 113 motor already ahs a draw back, poor flowing exhaust manifolds.Headers alone have gained as much as 30hp.Now that you have the exhaust and intake done, add the pulley and cooling kit.The cooling kit at this level has to be done,or the IAT's will never be stable enough on back to back runs or even fairly long runs. Then add the summer heat and humidity index, with out a isolated cooling kit the car is noit going to perform at its best.

My .05 cents worth.

Don't forget about the "sneaky ECU reset" (temporary mod, if a mod at all, or if it even works) and "K&N Air Filter ".

LOL!

Both are a total joke.

If you got the money, do a Pulley/ECU/Cooling to start.

If you really want to go fast, tint the windows and take off the front license plate!

K&N Filters and Sprintbooster are cheap/easy mods

Some will say Green Filters other say Stock.

If one goes in this order and goes to the bitter end, what is the total estimated cost and the resulting rwhp and rwtq, and estimated 1/4 mile time?
