Tyres - what should I go for.

I am replacing all four tyres on the standard 18" rims. What do you recommend. It always rains in the UK and I have the standard Conti on the front and BS s03 on the rear. Thanks.

I did Toyo Proxes (275's in the rear) and am very happy with the selection.

Very sticky tire and seems to ride well (about 6k miles on them). Others have commented they are better than the "coveted" PS2's and oh by the way they are about 40% less than PS2's and 25% less than the price of Conti's.

Eagle F1-GSD3. Now let the flaming begin, but these tires are the equal of the PS2's in the dry and cannot be touched in the wet. Car and Driver voted them best all around over just about everything in Dec. of '05. I've used them and they work.

how about up front...

can we go 255/40/18 or 255/35/18?

275/35/18 is perfect for the rear.

I'm looking for yokohamas or michelins... contis would be my 3rd choice as fars price.

Your worst nightmare...
I got these, they are R compound and are replacing the super sticky RA1, they are the R888. Sleeper X runs the RA1, what better testimony than that....

Check out the Nitto Invo tires. I love them and albeit I run them on the Renntech 10 spoke wheels. They are very quiet compared to the conti's and hook up very well. I can also say they are amazing in the rain!! Prolly the best tires in the rain that I have ever owned on all of my cars.

I am also in the UK and I put the PS2s on my standard 18s a while back.

All I can say is that after hearing all the great things about this tyre, I found them pretty slippery in the wet. Great in dry conditions, but any moisture on the road and the traction control light was on all the time.

It did improve slightly after a couple of thousand miles of wear but I went back to Contis after that as they seem to be a better all-purpose tyre for our crappy roads and weather...

As I said, the Eagle is hands down the better tire in the wet. The Michelins are great tires for all out dry performance, but the Goodyear was very close to the dry weather performance of most other tires in the rain. I can't seem to find the link to the test, but the F1's were #1, especially in wet weather.

I am going to get the F1 Ds G3's most likely. I read that C&D test again recently and overall it seems like the best. How is it noise wise and ride wise compared to the stock conti 2's?

Thx.

i've had all kinds of tires on the three benz's i've owned...gsd3's have been the best in the rain without a doubt...even when they looked bald in the back, they still did very well in the wet.

If you go PS2 then yes get the XL. They are rated by weight and you have to take all four corners into account.

If it rains a bunch and rain is your concern, then you really can't run high performance tires. The PS2s are a great compromise for me, but I am used to them being a bit more slippery in the wet than your OEMs.

If you really wanna have fun, get the Yokohama Advan A048s. I love them.

Ride was as good but not better than the Michelins or Continentals on my W210. I haven't tried the Eagles on my W211. Like all performance tires, the noise gets worse with wear, but these tires were amazing in the wet. Believe it or not, there wasn't a big difference wet or dry with the Eagles. They're that good in the water. Not quite the equal of the PS2's dry, but very good and as sticky as velcro in the wet. My current car is never driven in the rain, nor do we get much here, but these would be my only choice in a rainy area. Plus, the price is definitely right.

MB doesn't put PS2s on, do they? Keep in mind that load ratings aren't just in s, m, l, xl sizes. It is by weight.

Hi Guys, PS2 are now ready for replacement, just the rears. Quite happy with them, but looking for a change. Anyone tried out the Eagle F1 Asymetric?

Apart from the Nitto 555 drag radials and the mickey thompson drag radial which is the stickiest street tire for a 19" wheel.

Rain tire = Vredestein Sessanta.
According to some test or another, far better than the PS2.
I've had the GS-D3 and it was great in the rain.

I just want to check with the OP - are you running different makes of tires front and back?

If you are, then wet weather traction would of even greater concern than normal with the differing traction characteristics between the axles.

As for running an R-compound like the Toyo RA-1 on the streets, I also wouldn't recommend it because the tread pattern isn't optimal for dispersion of standing water and the compound will wear down very quickly in the dry.

The PS2 is a great tire, had it on a daily driver M3 some years ago. The Bridgestone S-02 PP was also a great dry/wet street tire - and could take an occasional foray on to the track too.

I'm running them on my car and have been really satisfied with them. Very round uniformity (i.e., very low GSP9700 road force variation measurements), quiet, and lots of grip. Also, they're not nearly as heavy as the RE050As they replaced.

get a drag radial outback, it will increase traction and give you are faster E55. Nitto makes an excellent drag for wet and dry pavement.

GS-D3's are un-matched in the rain, and grip like heck in the dry. GREAT tire for the money.

See yeah
