SL55 AMG, M5 E60, 2002 S55 AMG, Range Rover Sport Supercharged,
What I meant was... BACK BEFORE when the "65s" were introduced somewhere in 2006 I believe or 05, the Mercedes SL55 AMG I remember was often praised as the "fastest" Mercedes ever.
This was before the SL65, CL65, S65 were introduced. Obviously, the 55s' were blown away when the V-12 Biturbos came along.
I don't really care about the SL65 or CL65 or S65 AMG. I like the exhaust notes and feel of 55 kompressor more...

Several MB's Superperformance MK III Cobra
My wife has an '06 E55 and I have an SL55. On this board I will say that the E is quicker. On the Sl board the SL is quicker. I have modded the SL with the RennTech larger throttle body, pulley, ECU tune and the carbon fiber air box. The SL feels faster but when I do a run in a measured area with each car the E gets from A to B faster. I think the SL feels faster because of the exhaust sound and the fact that you are sitting closer to the road. In any event I love both cars and especially like the E because of the stealth factor.

Car Whore
so any non hardcore intrusive methods to drop 250lbs off the SL55?
I really really would prefer an SL over an E, it will handle better in while weaving through traffic

Not-so-hardcore:
- Replace stock AMG wheels with lightweight forged wheels, might save around 40 lbs or so
- Replace stock AMG rotors with lightweight Evosport rotors, might save around 40 lbs or so
- Replace lead acid batteries with lightweight batteries, might save around 20 lbs or so
Hardcore:
- Replace steel hood and trunk with carbon fiber, unsure of savings
- Replace one or both seats with a lightweight seat, unsure of savings
What else?

250 lb reduction would take some doing, I think. Here's the start of a list...

or.... Mercedes AMG should REALLY detune their engines on the E/CLS for the 55 kompressors down to 469 horses instead of false advertising...

My money is on the E55 (and I own both) which also handles a tad better... but the SL55 makes more HP. That's a fact.

Car Whore
ok ok ok guys...
so heres a good question... if we were open to hardcore engine mods like the Z06 and Cobra guys where we swap out the superchargers and actually make permanent modifications to the intercooler etc...
Can we reach their RWHP levels? i've read multiple times so far that almost all the mods available right now for our cars are designed so they are reversible or so they are not deeply intrusive because of the nature of the typical owner of a Mercedes.
However, say someone was OK with replacing the AMG Supercharger, replacing the Intercooler setup with a new permanent higher performance one, etc...
What is currently limiting our engines from the output we are seeing from the engines in Z06 and Cobras?
Myself personally, I wouldnt want to convert it to a twin turbo since its Supercharged stock... I'd rather improve on the FI Supercharged aspect of it.
Not to mention with a TT kit you would all of the original sound of the car, which is one of the main reasons I like the SL55.
If I wanted TT and fast id just get an SL65

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as modding the motor. The transmission electronics will limit your fun pretty early on, and for good reason. It won't handle much more than the bolt on stuff people are doing right now. Many are seeing the "load limit" in the software right now. Do away with the limit and much more than 600 HP is going to shred the trans. At that point, you're pushing the rest of the driveline as well. It really is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
