255/35/18 or 255/40/18 - depends on how you like it.

285/35/18

The OEM setup has a larger diameter in the front, but that is just because they are a little stuck between sizes for the 245s.

I've decided

Ps2's all around

255/35/18 Front
275/35/18 rear

What do you think.

Jangy didn't you at one time run 265's in the front and 295's on the rear on your oem 18" rims?

No, they are AMG rims and OEM, but not on the E55. The are 9 inch fronts and 9 inch rears and I run 275 front and 295 rear. My hREs are 9 inch front and 10 inch rears and I run 265 / 295 on those.

Tires

Anyone know if this same spec will fit the E63? I know the rims are a little different (wider) so I don't anticipate that that will be a problem. Time for PS2's here as well and thinking 255/285. Let me know if anyone has done it yet....

You will be fine. Same rear, 0.5 inch wider in the front.

Rubbing isn't the issue. Having a 295 on a 9" rim is. If you are wild enough to try the fit, I'm pretty sure it won't rub.

Don't forget rim widths

What many seem to lose sight of is the fact that tires are designed to fit on rims of specific width ranges. While it is physically possible to mount a 285/35/18 tire on a 9" rim (i.e., stock rear width on an E55), there isn't a tire manufacturer out there that says a 9" wide rim is an approved width for a "285" tire. The rim is too narrow.

When you mount mount a wider tire on a rim narrower than what is specified by the tire manufacturer for the tire, you are pinching in the sidewalls and causing the sidewalls to be loaded in a manner they weren't designed for. It may not happen immediately, but the adverse loads on the sidewalls can cause them to fail. It's a safety issue, pure and simple.

Yes, I've heard lots of guys say "well I mounted such and such on this width rim and never had a problem", but that's not the point. Yes, the tire may fit, but your way more likely to experience a catastrophic tire failure doing a canyon run when you've got a tire mounted on a rim it wasn't designed for. I've seen guys blow out on tires on the track during BMWCCA driving events where the sidewall failed because too much tire had been mounted on a narrow rim.

Here's the deal:

255's require a rim width range of 8.5" - 10"
285's require a rim width range of 9.5" - 11"

AMG wheels as found on our cars are available in 8.5" and 9.5" by 18" sizes if you want to run larger tires. I personally have 9's in the front and 9.5's in the rear, and there's no fitment issues.

Any wheel width usage narrower for those width tires as shown above and you're automatically nominated for your own personal Darwin award when something goes wrong. Let's be safe out there.

I would go with 255/40/18 and 275/35/18

I currently have a used set of Mich Sport 275/40/18 in the rear. It looks a bit chuncky.. but no rubbing issues at all. Also the ride is very comfortable even as sports 2 suspension.

275/35/18 is ideal I think for a 9" rim x 18.

if you upgrade to 9.5 and depending on the off set it will vary

CLS AMG Wheels on the E55?

Will the CLS AMG package wheels fit on the E? They look just like our OEM AMG wheels, but i think offset is a little bit more aggressive - people have been able to put cls wheels on without a problem, but the sport package has wider tires. 255/40/18 and 285/35/18....

Anyone try this yet?

your rear might be tight...

I know the CLS55 AMG 19"s won't fit with the EOM 285 tires.. they are also 9.5 wide.

you might need to downgrade to 275's..

but I'm 100% sure.
