Is it a fact that ...

The rotors must be replaced when you do pads?

Or is it a revenue generating requirement only?

If the rotors are below spec, they won't cut them at the dealership.

$1800 later, I have new brakes.

To my knowledge a revenue generating requirement.

Thanks guys.
I was just interested as to how MB might be different from every other rotor on the street. They're not. (Unless it's the 65 rotors.)

Revenue generator ... I can understand that though.

God I hope its not a Revenue generator. Just got told by the dealer that I need new front pads and rotors. Bought them for $800 online. Isn't the rule new rotors for every 2 brake pad changes.

Shaun, the rule is measure the thickness of the rotor and check min thickness spec.

Does MB stamp the min thickness on the rotor hat, like some manufacturers?

That was the rule of thumb (back in the day) and it figured you cut the rotors once.

In the end the answer is thickness as Wayne points out.

My BMW dealer told me they wouldnt allow me to do anything but replace both the rotors at the same time, even if the thickness was acceptable for fear of a lawsuit from me. i went to an indy and had new pads added.

Pad and rotor combos can wear at completely different rates. Rule of thumb is 2 sets of pads to a rotor, but the decider is always the condition of the rotor. Cracks, etc. and minimal integrity.
