Oil Change DIY for E63
Just finished changing the oil in my E63. Here is what I did.
• Went to the stealer and purchased an oil filter $23.00
• Purchased 9 qts of 0-40W Mobil 1 $30.00
• Purchased an oil extractor. Pela 14 qt capacity $100.00 (somewhat of a rip but at least it works)
• Drove car for 10 minutes to heat up oil so it comes out easier
• Opened hood and removed engine cover (front part with MB star)
• Removed old oil filter with wrench (child’s play)
• Sucked out used oil with Pela pump
• Put in new oil filter
• Put in 8 ¼ qts of oil (checked oil level as I added 7th and 8th quarts). Apparently couldn’t suck it all out.
• Drove car, waited a few minutes and checked oil again.
• Last, reset my Service C indicator. Not sure what Service C is??
The main driving force in this exercise is avoiding a trip to the stealer. I do hate the stealer!

Hi why did you use the pump and not the drain plug? I used to do this when I was a kid it is such a mess. Now I go to a local shop they charge me $20 to change the oil, I supply the parts. I pick up filters online I buy 4 at a time
Dealer does nothing except major warranty work, they are rip offs.
my car hit 5k miles I may do the oil change rather soon for the sake of it.

I have done the same oil change outside in front of my brownstone...I too found that I couldn't get all of the oil out with my extractor.. a bit of a pain.. (the same thing happened changing my the oil in my motorcycle)
I think next time that I will use the extractor and I will also drop the last bit from the drain plug...it could be almost a Q of oil...
no matter.. it is still a lot better than dealing with the dealer.

where can I find oil filters online for the 63 ? (cls63) I hate stealers!

did you guys have trouble putting the dipstick back in? i thought something was wrong with my dipstick but the service advisor told me that it is normal??

Do a search and type in reset and service. This will yield the results you need. It's a little tricky, just make sure you follow the instructions perfectly and you will be successful. Be sure and read all the responses to the post as some people provide more detailed instructions than other people. Let me know if you have any trouble finding it and I will go back out and find the same one I used. Let us know how that works.

This weekend I decided to change the oil on my E63. I have 9000 miles since the last change.
I just wanted to share some information.
1. there are 2 sumps. One in front above the roll bar with the drain plug on the passenger side of the car and one at the back on the drivers side The one at the rear is the main sump.
2. removing the 2 plastic panels was easy. The front one has some tubes for cooling and comes off easiest by pulling forward once the screws are removed.
3. The drain plugs have copper washers. They are 13mm.
4. I only had to jack up one side of the car with the suspension on the elevated setting to get under the car.
I also learned the following.
9qts is a lot of oil. Have a big drain pan.
The dealer is an idiot. The oil filter they gave me is the wrong one so the car is sitting in the garage without an oil filter.
It was as easy as any other car.

I would do it myself too except two things that I'm unsure of...
1) Does your warranty become void if you don't have this performed at dealerships?
2) How are you resetting the Service warning light in your dash?

Keep receipts for the oil and filter, record your mileage and date in your service record book, and the warrantee will be fine.
Just an update.
I must not have tightened 2 of the screws on the leading edge of the front plastic panel because I heard a plastic noise under the car, looked under, and saw one of the panels hanging down. I was pissed at myself, but I had some extra screws laying around and took care of it.
The screws are basically sheet metal screws that screw into a plastic insert to act as a self locking nut. I must have simply not tightened them enough or forgot to do anything but start them by hand. Duh.
As for resetting, you do not say what year you have. The method varies by year, but for me I insert the key, turn on the ignition, change the display to MPH, punch the odometer reset 3 times, and the service menue comes up. You need to play with it a bit to learn how to navigate through it. This is also where dyno mode is found as well. You can also get software versions and VIN.

FYI, If you are using an oil extractor, run the car at idle for a few minutes tops and do not go out and drive it. This will be just enough to get the oil slightly warm without getting it hot.
We use oil extractors for our formula cars to empty the oil tanks (the engines are dry sump) and if you use the oil extractors with hot oil, they fail very quickly and you have to spend $100 all over again which is not on my list of fun things to do!

9qts * $6.50 = $58.50
Filter about = $27.00
Total = $85.50
I find it hard to believe that labor is only $13.50. But if they are using the right oil, you are a luck guy.

Man an extractor? People use those things? I prefer the old fashioned drain. I recently did my oil change & it was cake. Even installed some magnetic drain plugs.

My Service C was $115 but I did the air filters myself. Bought K&N's for less than dealer wanted to install new factory ones.

Well since your car was engineered my Mercedes to use an extractor for oil changes, then yea, people use them. Why do you think they bothered to engineer the filter on top of the engine?

I don't see a problem with an oil extractor. That's what we have to use in the Jet Ski world to change 4 stroke engines. It's clean and easy to do. Thanks for the write up!
