Attn. All 63 AMG Owners regarding engine ticking and other sounds.
I think there was a post on this on the CLS board. I noticed after 3k miles when i am driving city, i hit the gas and hear bad ticking and crackling sounds coming from the engine. Only when i roll drivers window down. Sounds like tensioners or something is just not right when there is a load placed on the car. It also can be loose exhaust or something i have no idea but its starting to alarm me.
It gets louder when warmed up.
My car is going in WED so I will bring this to there attention I hope its nothing like a major engine tear down because if it is Im so going to be pissed.
Just like to hear the fix and TSB on this for the 63 engines

Sounds like pre-detonation/ignition.
I brought mine in for the same symptoms and the dealer updated the software. Still noticeable when climbing hills, but not as bad as before.
Are you using premium gas? If so, maybe try another gas station.
Let us know how your service visit turns out.

Way2evil what dealership are you using and why did they ignore your concern? To me it doesnt sound like detonation it sounds like engine pulley noise, belt tensioners or timing tensioners. Its definitly something external on the motor assembly. I will make sure i get an answer this week and I will let you guys all know.
I do use 93 fuel and I also use a great additive called Torco that a hot rod friend gave me a huge 55 gallon drum of.
Detonation would be more obvious at higher RPM, this is happeing at speeds of 5mph to 20mph under partial to full throttle load in city stop and go traffic.

well it sounds like this is common, i just hope we dont have any failure. I had a Jaguar 4.2 XKR and it had similar sounds when they switched to the 4.2 design in 03. Dealer ignored it and said its fine, 4k miles later timing tensioners failed and motor fried and no car for 2 months, complete disaster.
I dont want to be in that position

There is a fix for this...MBUSA knows of the potential problem......
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a sporadically occurring noise when starting
with a warm engine, this may be due to the intake camshaft adjusters. To remedy, replace the intake
camshafts and intake camshaft adjusters per WIS document number AR05.20-P-6992AMG.
I had the same issue and when they replaced the adjusters...no noise..!!

Interesting. My car ('07 E63) does this on cold idle after having not been driven for a while, then will (mostly) go away. I can still hear it at times driving close to Jersey walls and whatnot. I planned on asking my shop about it next time I was in for service... will reference that doc.
