What's up with the Shelby GT500 Super Snake?
What's up with the Shelby GT500 Super Snake w/20 in wheels? In this months Road & Track the car is given a glowing review. This car is the factory approved upgrade to the normal GT500 that gives the 4,085 lb animal 605 bhp and 590 ft lb. The odd thing is the unimpressive times it throws down of 4.4 sec 0-60 and 12.5 1/4. Seems slow for the trycycle as modified by Shelby himself. The upticked car gets all of Ford's racing gadgets and keeps its factory warranty that is 3 yr./36,000 miles.
Another upgrade that shi'ts the warranty is a added blower that throws down 725 bhp! BTW, the cost of the Snake, as modified is $72,000, a cool $28,000 over the base price GT500. The C63 is faster for less jack.
Still trying to figure out why the Snake doesn't do better considering our stock 55 and 63 times in the 1/4 mile? Maybe they can't drive right at R&T.

i'm quite sure that in the real world the car will do better...MUCH BETTER than reported so far. the good thing is we won't run into many (if any) on the street!

The reason it accels like crap is because it does nothing but burnout. just read the review. thats all it does, lol. Also, its got like a 3.73 rear end, which is shorter than stock, so that doesn't help. Why the hell they would put a shorter ratio on it when it weighs less and has a ton more powe and torque is beyond me. Dumb if you ask me![smash](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smashfreak.gif)
Typical american muscle, lol

I have a GT500. Regular one.
The only modification to mine is a Kenne Bell "replacement" blower/throttle body/intake (all in one kit). Through stock exhaust manifolds and full stock exhaust it should make close to 700rwhp on pump gas, 800rwhp w/smaller pulley and race gas. I have not put on the dyno yet.
Total investment about 50k
The one thing about these cars is the suspension sucks for drag racing and needs to be replaced in the back for any decent times to be had.
I just finished that.

Beautiful garage and cars! Props for doing your own wrenching too. Do you have any more pics of your garage.

50k for the car and the mods? That's a steal.

Yep, sticker for car, and about 6k for blower/throttlebody/air intake.
Best HP/dollar out there right now as long as your willing to swap the blower for the KENNE BELL.

you've also gotto take into consideration that magazine drivers are NOT the best source of decent times. I remember when the 03 cobra came out (first supercharged cobra ever) they had a best of 12.8 or 12.9. @110mph. a friend of mine got a 12.4s totally stock and the best time for an all stock car was 12.3s.
If you are interested in finding out what that super snake will do then wait until MM&FF drives it. that's the only reputable time i'll believe. they gotten a stock shelby (not the super snake, one with less hp) in the low 12 secs, they'd have no issues getting this car in the 11s.
Shelbys and fords in general are not as straight forward as our cars. With our cars all you do is point and shoot. Snakes are only as efficient as their drivers.
(i know this because i've own a 93 cobra, 95 gt, 01 cobra, 03 cobra, and now a 96 cobra)

2001 BMW 330 convertible
Cancelled by GT500 order
After being on a wait list for almost 2 years (I was too far down on the list for an '07), I cancelled my spot for an '08 GT500 and decided to buy an E55. I'm not knocking those who bought the Shelby but the car just didn't do it for me after I read about things like wheel hop and the fact they don't have civilized things like heated seats. Ya, I know you guys who think they are for pussies but here in Canada that ice cold leather in the cool weather gets to you. I guess I'm just a car snob but going from my BMW to a Ford was too much of a downgrade in quality. The E55 to me has all the quality, class, bells and whistles that I love and goes like hell. I have to sell the BMW before I buy the E and hope to have that done soon.
