definitely NOT a sleeper though. we valeted outside of kona grill yesterday and there was a crowd taking pictures around his r34 while completely ingnoring a 996tt, bright red 348, and others. the funniest thing was the fcar owner had to ask people to move to get to his car.

tough choice. if go 996tt, consider sending to sharkwerks here in Bay Area. friend just had his 997tt tuned to ~615 hp; they are fanatics there and high-quality workmanship. good luck-choice sounds like a very quality problem.

Sleeper, if ride quality and comfort are an issue pick the SL.
If the "feel" of the car matters and you can take advantage of the more precise handling, take the 996.
And hey, don't forget that the roof goes down on the SL.
Good luck.

Well, if you're thinking 997TT than by all means. May not have the crazy HP yet that the 996 has but chipped and exhaust is pretty quick. As I and others have said the interior is night and day different. Check enough options boxes and you'll be hard pressed to find a better interior anywhere.
Also, if you want to mod, there's no reason to send to sharkwerks (or anywhere far away for that matter). There's plenty of good tuners around here. It's an exhaust and a chip - not that difficult.
If you want to drive mine to see if you would be comfortable let me know.

There are alot of guys with r32,33 and even 34 engines in their 240's in South Florida and from my understanding making 800 to 1000 hp will require way more than RB26DETT 'Z1' internals to be reliable.
Back on topic my vote is for the heavy Merc that everyone you race will underestimate but that's just me. I can just picture it now a 65 with thin gt40r's.

Sleeper I would go with the SL black series.lol sl65 is fine but if you do go with the P-car Evotec is dying to show what they can do with the P-cars i know Adam will hook you up to show off what it can do. I know this cuzz he offered it to me. I hope that wasnt a secret Adam

Your worst nightmare...
I never really liked the the looks of the r34 either, definitely nicer than the r32's which just looked like nicer 240's imho.

Check out the CL hanging out with the P-car Ruf R turbo... Imagine if it would have been an SL, bit lighter...

The SL65 is still an awesome choice, but if you want serious horsepower, you need the ability to put power down to all four wheels.
Therefore I vote Porsche. 139mph trap.

That is a VERY tough choice.
Thing is you want to modd - OK both are good for that.
Daily driver and comfortable? Has to be the SL, the 996 is a bone rattler.
Need for speed? 996 will be quicker when modded and outhandle the SL by a large margin.
So its 1-1 ... then there is price... 996 all in will be much less $$$.
So its 2-1 to the Porsche, but make sure you can live with it as a DD.
You should maybe consider the 997 as its a better ride as a DD and bigger performance upgrades for it will come over time and possibly exceed what they get out of the 996's ...
Will you track the car? ... then P car for sure.
Do you need kiddy seats ? ... then P car for sure.
Thats kinda where I am at.... I have been thinking of giving beast to wife and me getting a toy - only need one family car. The F430 is more of an occasion car but no kiddy seats kinda kills it .. but still not sure as I will have one super fast family car anyhow. Gallardo ? Hear some TT setups on that available too.
Ferk - dont think I am helping now so i'll shut up.

Its funny how I'm in almost the same exact boat as you are Frank, just I'm targeting spring time and I have less $ than you
- R34 Skyline GT-R: Its illegal in the US, its as rare as they come, offers amazing potential, very expensive to mod, awd, expensive for an old car, hard time finding one. It's good if you wanted the ultimate tuner car, but not as a daily driver. But the RB26DETT is a ridiculous engine, lets leave it at that.
- R35 GT-R: I was the first on the list for it, had it guaranteed at MSRP by Rockland Nissan. They called up and BSed about how they can only give it to me for $20k over sticker. After proving it to them in black and white they then said "well we're not even getting any." Rather than going through court and putting up with a slimey dealership, I just asked for my deposit back. Sucks 'cause I had high hopes for that car, oh well.
- 996TT: Great looks, proven drivetrain, very cool community, handling that wrecks any Benz, potential up to 1000hp (see guys like Markski on 6speed). With that said, interior is ok, the ride quality is pretty harsh, not very roomy, and its a stick vs auto. Another thing is that its already been done, you can find dozens of 650hp+ turbos in Jersey and LI. Not to mention that to mod these things it looks like you have to spend in between $25-40k...thats a lot of dough. I posted a thread on the 996TT forum over at 6speed and the majority reccomends that I buy a Porsche thats already been tuned, it'll save a ton of money.
- SL65: Prestige, top of the line, convertible, 2 seater, comfortable as hell, heavy, torque monster. Handling ain't that great, they've never been pushed past just basic boltons and ECU tuning so you'd be the first. Could be a groundbreaking experience or a nightmare. Who knows how much money you'd have to spend too considering everything will be custom fabricated and you'd be experimenting. If you suceed then you'll only increase your legend I'm personally very interested in a CL65 since I'd like the back seats.
- Z06 Vette: Yeah, I know, its American and its been done over countless times...but if you want the ultimate in performance you could always pick up one of these and mod it to your hearts content. Best handling, best acceleration, looks hot, crap interior, crap ride quality, cheap car with inexpensive mods.
- M6: Great top end, gorgeous car, very cool interior, sweet 7 speed SMG, high revving V10. Torqueless, expensive, n/a means very little modding options. You can do boltons and tune and get it to the 550hp range and put a 150 shot of nitrous- 700hp? But I'd rather get there without nitrous so I think that getting this wouldn't be any better than your current car.
Believe me man, this is very hard. Luckily, I'm sitting back and got a couple of months before I gotta make that life altering decision lol. Good luck man.
Maybe Dragon could chime in on here since he went from a moddd E55K to a modded 996TT?

The pcar is obviously harder to extract it's capabilities than the benz but it can be very rewarding. It can also be very docile and easy when you want it to be.

IMO, sport or lux? there is so many little features an SL65 is going to offer you that a 911 won't, but the 911 is AWD and can do so much sport the SL won't... so... for a 1 car, everyday driver, I would honestly go with the SL65 - lux features, still sport and not to mention hard top convert! +++ after you get moving off the line, SL65 is REALLY fast, I had one blow me away, we started @ speed limit on a 45mph RD, prob doin 50 and he DESTROYED ME! (like out of ****ing sight - but he might not have been stock) So practicality vs. funfactor...
EDIT: Oh, if this is NOT your ONLY car, 911.

tough call and two different cars. If yor getting a 6spd 996tt then I would say the sl will be more consistent in races. Also the sl is maxed out after ecu tune which is 3-4k to get a 996tt to hang with a tuned sl65 you NEED the evoms stg4 (600hp) which is 10-12k. so you may get the car cheper but the cost to mod will be more. There is a guy here with a 2005 turbo s with the evo stg pkg and when we race we run even untl 120-130 or from a dig who ever gets the jump wins. the sl is a blast but the p cars have WAY more potential to go fast with evo and the gt 850 kit but at a cost of 50k plus. Good luck and go drive both cars and see what you like. My tuned sl65 (583whp) has beat the 996 turbo s gt600 and also a 500whp c6 z06. the z06 just added cams and got 543whp and is now faster again. the sl is the sleeper for sure.

I look at it like this: You want speed, get the GT-R. Ya it's a Nissan, Ya it's not as good soundin as having a Pcar but it will be a beast. And the 996 is outdated and has a inferior interior. The 997 would be nice for a DD but won't be as fast as the GT-R. The SL would get my vote....do you really need the power of the GT700? I mean if it's your DD then i don't think you will be getting on that car all that much. The SL is a MB, it's has the luxury features you need and it looks good and is quicker than most cars on the road.
