Car doesn't look totaled to me.

Would have to be about 50-60K in damage to total that thing, right?

Either way, glad you're ok.

After looking at the pics, my gut feeling is that the insurance company is going to want to fix the car. I would push for salvage, ie frame damage, not safe to drive, putting other drivers at risk, yada, yada, yada. Let us know what happens.

You may even want a couple shops to take a look at it to get a high bid (not a fraudulent one, but a careful one).

I got rear ended in my Audi 2 years ago. I looked at it and immediately new the car was totalled. Repair shop initially bid $9k (car value was probable $25k at the time) and shut the door on me pushing the insurance company to total the car.

After $35k in repairs, the insurance company gave up, saying the other guy's insurance was maxed out. Got it most of the way there, but not quite. I've since put about $10-15k in repairs that 'appear' related to the accident. On top of that, my car is worth d**k-50 now.

Could I go after the other guy for the money? sure... but my time and sanity is worth more to me. Not to mention, I'm not in the country enough to manage a legal battle, anyways.

Point is... make it easier on yourself in the long haul. If you can get the insurance company to total the car, that's going to be your best bet. Especially in anything more than a minor fender bender.

Ya, I agree.

I think it falls in that "grey" area where it really should be totalled, but the insurance company is probably going to try and cheap out and get it fixed for less. The general rule of thumb is when it costs around 70% of the car's value to repair, they will total it. However, on very late-model cars, that can be flexible because the parts value is still so high. You can get it totalled if you push.

Just from the pics, that car has at least $30k in damage. The kicker is that I don't see any way that you could punch the right front corner in like that without whacking the right front frame rail...and you don't wana own a car that has had frame damage, it will NEVER be right again. The tires won't wear evenly, you'll have perpetual alignment problems, seals won't be as tight as they should, things will rattle, and on and on.

Oh shiittt!! Sorry friend, I thought this was a bogus thread. That sucks!!!

In my defense, my post sounded wittier last night while under the influence of a few glasses of Barossa Valley Shiraz.

Good luck

That's funny, I just walked in the house to find a bottle of 2005 Barossa Valley Shiraz on the kitchen counter.
Don't know who put it there.

bro: hang in there; be patient with yourself and the insurance/replacement situation. I came close to disaster last night myself. After the accident, I just sat there for a moment, taking a quick inventory. For me, it was a reminder/warning.

Glad you sound ok. Wishing you the best, especially during Christmas time.

Take care.

Heres a way to get it totalled..

Go to the shop at night and rev the car to the max. with no oil (cooler busted) it will blow. Then the bill will be 45k +higher. Not covered under waranty due to wreck..

On a serious note, the car will be repaired unless you have the New car replacement package in your insurance binder. Just be glad you O.K. and safe.

The car is not hurt bad enough to total it. That aluminum piece in the pic is not the frame, it is the bumper reinforcement and it did its job protected the rest of the car as best as it could. It looks horible but its not really gonna be that bad. Watch them like a hawk when they fix it and trade it off when they get done.

If someone else would have hit you you could get a new car easily but since it was you by yourself your gonna have to get it fixed..

You will get 2 new door skins, Repair 1/4 panel, fender, Bumper, airbags couple of wheels. 50% of value (50k+ estimate) is what it would take to total.

Good luck and drive safe!

Putting the air bags back will be huge. Repairs will definitely exceed 60% of the value. The only question is what the value of the car really is. USAA is an excellent company and will settle quickly and at a fair price.

Glad you are okay.

You are so lucky that tree was a small one. You've got eight left.

I don't think he's with USAA anymore, he said he had too many points and he's with a HIGH RISK Carrier... if that's true then it will be much harder to get the car total loss... but year it's depends on where they look at the start value of the car... I would say it's gotta be closer to 70% at least that's where we start...

....Years later... True, I was with progressive or something, I am not too pleased with how it all went down. But after much hassle with the body shop, she's in perfect condition, it was many visits back and lots of complaints and nasty letters up the food chain. They ended up shelling $78k, cars sticker was $115 (Maronie sticker floating on here somewhere) The body shop did some damages to the car during all these repair trips, costing them $15k, which they ended up firing some people over. One big ticket item was they scratched the screen on the Nav (which is the entire command units) DOH. I'm with Geico now, but I think I can go back to USAA now, I am older (now over 25) and no points in a long time, I've calmed down ....****, I am getting old =-0

Wow....$78k in damage + $15k in body shop damage. At $93k in total damages, is there anything on the car that is original? LOL!!

Side note....that car is beautiful. With the P30 option, white, and Pano, I would call that my dream E63.
