Drove a M5 yesterday.
SMG on p500sport mode.
I am not sure what happend, I punched it many times but the acceleration actually feels weaker than my e63. Anyone drove one before and feel the same? Also, I don't like the way the SMG shift at all, i put it on the most sporty mode.

A lot of people have complained about the harsh aggressive shifting of the SMG on sport mode but reading the M5boards, it seems like a lot of members love it as well

Although he offered me a chance to drive,I passed&let CylinderHead beat on his M5&rip some sweet donuts before rippin down the road:it sounded real sweet under throttle&shifted very crisply at redline.I couldn't tell which was faster my E63 or his M5,as they're both quick

besides the power and styling.. i love the m5 for its transmission.. its more fun than a normal trans like our amgs, but also good in heavy traffic like a normal automatic, love the way it shifts also

M5 rocks you just need to keep the RPM up. Granted it outdrives the AMG any day of the week but the AMG is much nicer looking and have a more user friendly interior and ergonomics. I am getting an 08 M5 very soon.

Are you kidding? The SMG in full auto mode is the reason I bought the E55. Sucks in traffic.

SMG sucks in full auto mode. I think i used it about twice just to check it out. I do admit you have to get used to driving the SMG, but after you do it does put you in more control with you car than a regular full automatic. I actually like it. The shifts are ferocious in S6 mode.

Less Tourque makes them feel not as fast. if you raced one it is amost a dead heat from a roll (the E63/E55 get the US versions good out of the hole) to well over 100. Frankly, it does not make sense after driving a E and M5 that the M is as fast...
The gearing is the M's best asset, along with the 8,500 (I think) redline.
Personally, I love the hard-shifts (tire scatching) of the M's on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts!

I think the AMG is more fun stoplight to stoplight just because of the torque, but that's about as far as it goes IMHO. The M is a much better driving car all the way around. I do think the looks are boring though, which explains why I have a CLS. I can see how the SMG could get annoying in traffic, but it's pretty cool when you are beating on it. It feels like the car is gonna come apart when it shifts in kill mode!

Those M3 numbers are a bit optimistic. I doubt you will find them on dragtimes for a stock car.
The V10 delivers max torque in the last 3000 rpm of the rev range and when you couple this with a 7 speed gearbox, you will be in the sweet spot of the powerband in WOT acceleration.
Also around a racetrack, you can easily keep the engine in the powerband do neat things like throttle steer. Lots of fun.

I love my M6 ...but its more of a pre-meditated speeder. I have to plan my attack and then go, versus my old E55 or my 65 where I could and can just commit random acts of speeding without thought.
Ill tell you one thing, people who love to drive in the high rpm ranges will love the S85 engine. Its really a driver involving motor and the benefits pay out enormously if, as T-Bone said, keep the revs up.
I am glad to have both- they really compliment each other (65 vs the M6).

There are two entirely different philosophies and driving styles at play between the E55/E63 and M5 (the gap is closer between 63 and M, but 55k and M are worlds apart). First of all, the M5's gearbox is specifically designed to work in harmony with the V10. You can't just mash it and go, you have to be in the right gear at the proper revs (6k+ will do).
The SMG requires a lot of attention and a lot of shifting, if you can't accept that, then you're going to hate it. Fine by me, I don't like seeing a lot of other M5's on the road.
On a side note if anybody in the Tri-State wants a REAL test drive, I'll walk you through it.
