Should I have a rear laser diffuser?

Juts got my new E63 AMG Arctic White 4 days ago. The dealer installed K40 Calibre front/back detector and front lazer diffuser.

The question is, should I also have a rear laser diffuser as well? I have the package but instructed the dealer not to install it just yet.

Any comments on its usefullness in the back of the car. Also if it is a good idea, where is the best place to install it?

Thanks.

Normally they point lasers at the front of the car, no? If they're behind you and you're speeding, well just go faster!!!

Sometimes they point laser from behind, and have other LI in the front to stop you.

I think that's pretty useless.

The only time it could conceivably come in handy is if there was a cop driving in traffic behind you, and he decided to pop you. If you're anything like me, you're probably passing traffic most of the time and would already have spotted him and slowed down anyway.

I guess the exception would be freeway entrance ramps...they can sure sneak up on you in that situation and I got snagged once like that. Now every time I go over an overpass I tend to glance in the rearview and scan the ramp, and am usually back down to 65 or 70 before the oinker even finishes merging onto the highway.

Plus, I'm still not completely sold on the whole concept of laser diffusers. For them to work like they are supposed to, it has to be almost a dead-on 0-degree angle shot, and the cop has to be aiming at your license plate. I'm not sure it does much in a real-world setting, though there are people that swear by them...

Personally, I have a 100% success rate with my setup of the last 6 months or so...which consists of nothing but my Beltronics STi and a good set of eyes. In fact, I just bought a newer SL600 and drove it back from long island 2 weeks ago with a grand total of 0 tickets. The Bel saved my butt about 6 times, but not once was there any cop I didn't see behind me. I think that's a minor concern.

Do it, get it installed ASAP. I was already tagged once by laser from behind. mind you I had front laser jammers and a freakin rabit!! K40 doesn't have the best rear jamming thought, might be pointless to install it. I would consider another laser jammer if you want to cover your back!

Thank you all.

The only problem I have with front diffuser is the way it sticks out on the license plate. Also the license plate bracket is a little curved due to the bumper curviture and it makes it hard to install the K40 diffuser using the K40 supplied license frame.

Does nay one have recommendation on the most effective way to install the diffuser.

I just stopped by Audi Design on LI and they recommended two diffusers in the front, mounted into the grill of the E63, however they woulkd have cut out the 2 grille dividers to allow unobstructive view for the diffuser.

Did anyone install K40 diffuser in the front? And if so what is the best method of installation in the front?

Thanks.

Albert congratulations on your new 63.
Yes by all means install the rear diffuser.
My install has 2 in front behind the lower mesh grill (no front plate FL)
and one mounted inside top of rear window on center line under antenna.

i would put them in especially because you live on LI, they like to sit behind bridges and get you when you pass them. I have seen them sitting on bridges too. SSP at rush hour is the worst
edit: where on LI are you? you should come to captree this sunday

I live in Great Neck, would love to join you guys this sunday, but I think it is going to snow. Let me know where and what time you are meeting, I will join you.

Any recommendation on the shop where they can install the rear lazer diffuser (quality installation)?

I would do it, and just use the license plate holder. I have the escort SRX in my 55 with a laser diffuser mounted under the rear bumper. I was tagged with laser from behind once on Rt. 80. It was before I installed it, and my dash mounted Passport didn't utter a peep. I wished that day that I had installed it.

I just installed the calibre system in my Jeep last Saturday, but only in the front. I am not going to go insanely fast in the Jeep, so a rear diffuser is pointless for me. I realy wanted to have a radar for when I am doing 50 in a 35 at 7:00 a.m. getting to work on secondary roads. Cops in my area are not using laser anyway.

Now - I have to tell you that I think the calibre sucks. I tested it with my dash mounted Passport and there is no comparison. I am getting no Ka band warning on the K40 until my Passport is already on max alert. I literally lose three seconds or more, and that could be the difference between a ticket and continuing on your merry way. I have run the same test with the Escort SRX, and the SRX will beep a second after the Passport starts beeping. I am going to ask the installer to remove the receiver from behind the bumper and mount it somewhere behind the plastic grille to see if that helps.

............I understand that from your point of view, the rear difuser is not neccessary, but is there a disadvantage?

Naw, no dis-advantage I can think of really, except the cost of the install.

Unlike radar, laser works only in a stationary position and can't be used through glass.

If you have the rear diffuser, put it on. It's not that hard for the cop to get you coming or going and still nail you.

I have the rear difusser installed in my back bumber. The matte finished bumber cover was removed. Then the the polished (painted) bumber cover was cut to allow the difusser to be installed behind it and show through. The matte finished cover was also cut. It is important that this cut be made very percisely. Then it was reinstalled over everything, and the difuusser sits flush and is barely noticable. If I ever want to remove ot all I need to do is replace the inespensive matte bumber cover.

I would recommend having it installed. In my area the state troopers like to sit on over passes and shoot at you after you've passed.
