Winter or All Season Tires

I don't really drive my car in the snow but I will drive it the day after the snow falls some of the roads are packed with snow. Anyone have experience with All Season tires. The following tires are available in the sizes I need.

Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position
Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season

Or do I just pick up a second set of 18" wheels and get some Winter tires?

Any thoughts on All Seasons?

Thx.

i wouldn't trust ur car w/ all-season tires in the snow. if u had AWD than all-seasons would be fine but not w/ ur RWD beast w/ all that horsepower and torque.

get a dedicated set of 18s w/ winter tires and be easy on the throttle and u'll be fine.

I have a dedicated set of Blizzaks and they make the car formidable in the snow. I have a steep driveway which led me to an SUV, but once out of the driveway, I've been very pleased.

+1 on the Blizzak, especially as we both live in Denver! You will find the LM-25 is a great performance snow that can be driven to 100MPH all day long with no issues.

It is the perfect winter tire for Colorado to save your hide if you get caught out or want to drive the car after a storm or even a week after the storm the way the weather has been lately. It also offers top performance in the really nasty stuff if you care to drive in the winter.

For Colorado, skip the all-season approach as they are garbage when it gets slick and are poor summer performers.

Also, we have local tire and wheel shops that are good enough to mount/dismount onto your summer wheels without putting so much as a scuff on them so you don't have to buy another set of wheels.

PM me if you want the name of a shop.

go 18's and snows, keep your summer rims salt free. I'm running Dunlop Sport 3Ds and they transform the car. You can drive in the snow and it feels 1000% better. All seasons will work, just not that well. Summer tires are like wearing dress shoes in the snow. All seasons are like wearing sneakers. Snows are like wearing timberland sh-tkickers. You can wear sneakers when you are out snowblowing, but you are still going to slide around a bit. (oh, and you look like an idiot doing it).

One argument to using the same wheels year round where we are in Denver is that there really is nothing that is put on the roads that will harm the wheels (there is no salt here and they hardly ever chemically treat in the city limits). The only argument otherwise would be if you do winter highway or mountain driving and then the wheels are the last thing you have to worry about, the car will be chipped to hell and back from the rocks. In the winter, I just drive my truck when I need to go to the mountains or on the highway as I hate rock chips!!!!!!!!!

I agree. I'm using Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2s on 18s and the car did great in a snowstorm we had a couple of weeks ago. No trouble climbing hills,or stopping.

I'll throw my $0.02 in and suggest getting a dedicated set of 18" wheels with snows mounted, especially considering your location in CO.

I've always had the dedicated snows for all of our cars, and will have to get a set even for my wife's new X5 4.8i as the run flats that come standard are all season.

In addition to the consideration for the accumulated snow and ice, there is the factor regarding temperature that makes running snow tires in winter the more sensible choice. For the summer performance tires, any temp below 45F makes them pretty ineffective in terms of traction - though admittedly I'm sure all seasons would operate further down the thermometer. But I don't like the concept of compromises, especially when it involves a major safety factor like tires on the cars.

As there's been no winter here in metro NY yet, I can't speak to the effectiveness of the Dunlop Winter Sport M3s I'd mounted on MSW wheels for my E63 - but I've had the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22s and -25s and they were great winter tires. The LM-25s mounted on my previous Audi A8L made the car unstoppable in any wintry weather and it was far more tractable than many SUVs during major snow storms.

allseasons especially in 19 size & wide widths are useless in snow. and you'll kick yourself in the summer when your car drives like a dog*****.

i'm kinda disappointed by the lack of snow/ice grip of my Pirelli Snowsport 240s. Granted, they are 245/40/18s and VR rated, 50x better than allseason/summer tires, but they aren't as confidence inspiring as I thought they'd be. Without ESP/ASR I'd be screwed

Are your stock tires on the Pres Edit. 19's? All the E55s I'm familiar with have the 18in amg split spoke wheels, but tire rack lists the car as having both 18 and 19s. Whats the deal?

I think they have them in limited sizes. Tirerack is the best place for the Blizzak LM-25 and they have great ice grip.
