What to buy, E-55 or E-63?
Hi guys, I am new to this thread and soon to be new to MB. I have been driving Range Rovers for the past 10 years and I'll be dumping my '03 Range Rover in about a month. I want to move into either an '05/'06 E-55 or an '07 E-63.
Logic tells me I can buy an '05/'06 E-55 for around $15-$20k less than a good, low mile '07 E-63, but given I don't know a whole lot about the advantages/disadvantages of one or the other, I am hoping you guys can share some thoughts on what you would choose?
Is the E-63 a better car? I plan on keeping the car for 6-7 years, so would the non-supercharged E-63 be more reliable?
Any other thoughts on which way to go are very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Uh, oh. Here we go again...
Jk...but I'll defer on this one b/c I am a new E55 owner. As for the E55, I have loved every minute of driving mine, but not every minute of owning it (I hope I never have to go back to the dealer what what should be warranty repairs). MB service sucks, but you'll have to deal with it either way go.
Gluck!

The two cars are so close in performance in stock form that it's a coin toss.
If you plan on modding the car, there are presently more high-HP options out here for the 55K....but the aftermarket is slowly starting to provide for the 63.
I've never driven the E63, but the exhaust note is awesome.
You can't go wrong either way.

Coming from 10 years in Rovers huh? good lord..
You might want a E500 or E550
These cars are f-ing monsters.
Now as far as what car to buy.
The last model E55 is called a W211 E55
Really right now they are the best bang for your buck in the whole fleet and will always be looked at as one of the best MB's ever made.
Now you can get the new E63 and have a little more HP and a slight change of style, more gadgets, but finding a low miled one at a deal is probably not going to be much of a deal, MB is freaking GIVING away new cars right now and newer model used cars have such bad depreciation they can't be bargained with like a new car. You can steal a 63 right now at my dealer.
IF you want the baddest MB ever made for under 50K, Get the W211E55 and get one that has a factory CPO to 100K

And it has low miles and has been driven gently... one quarter mile at a time!!!
If you are going to mod it, 55. If you want a better balanced package, 63. That is what all of the car rags say, watch the top gear reviews on youtube of the 63 vs the M5. They are pretty funny and the conclusion is the 63 is a better overall car than the 55. It is hard to argue with 516 ft pounds of midrange torque, though. If you like straight line performance and power from any point in the powerband, the 55 is the way to go. If you want slightly better handling and power that comes on more progressively, go 63. Although a stock 55 and stock 63 are very close on a dragstrip, around town the 55 feels faster because the midrange torque is so freaking insane that the slightest throttle application throws you back in the seat. Drive them both the way you drive normally, see which one fits your driving style, then decide.

at 50K...I can't see paying close to 100K for the 63..
I let other people take it in the shorts, I don't care if I get something thats been around with a few door dings, after buying new (Ml, C32,M3,GT3 2 company beater C230K and C240) and getting raped (Now this is over 6 years) I'm not buying new again, at least not in this range.
Now the only cars that did not hurt me too bad, were from Porsche and BMW, for Benzes..forget about it..
I got such a good deal on my E55 after drooling over them for years and MercBenz finacial has great specials on used cars.
In plain English, The Car was 90K in 04 not including TAX, the owner drove it 25,000 miles and I paid half of the OG price with a 100K warranty.
Feel good about purchases, I would have serious REMORSE if I got a 63 right now.
So for the OP< depends on if you want the newest thing or a guy who want's an older thing that is close to the new thing but used.

In stock form, both cars are very close in performance and the outcome of a head to head race will likely be determined by the driver than the car.
If you plan to keep the car stock, then go for the E63: more updated looks, better suspension, better handling, more warranty coverage, more refined interior, etc....
If you even think about modding, then you have to go with the E55. You can add 100+ hp relatively cheap and have one of the fastest 4 door sedan to ever cruise the streets

I would go with the faster of the two... I heard it was the 55 should we start a new thread to discuss which is faster?

Agree with all:
63 Pros: Updated exterior styling/steering wheel, 7speed tranny, warranty, exhaust note, 030 option
55 Pros: Modded performance, dynamic seat option.
When I was a bimmer nut, I used to quote "there is no replacement for displacement".....I now know that forced induction/TORQUE is a damn good replacement!

Keeping My E55, Buying Extended Warranties
Great thread that reaffirms my recent decision to keep my 05 E55 for a few more years. I'm also buying an extended warranty through DaimlerChrysler for both of my cars (04 CLK55) that will ensure that they are mechanically covered for a long time to come. BTW, I did a lot of research on extended warranties, I talked to all the providers mentioned in numerous posts (searched the archives), I received a lot of quotes and right now DaimlerChrysler is the best for the most reasonable price ($4K total for both cars, 7 years from ORIGINAL in-service date, 85K miles, $50.00 deductible). Daimler still owns 20% of Chrysler and that's why it's still a DaimlerChrysler warranty. The only restrictions are 1) the car must be regularily serviced (A&B) at a MB dealer, and 2) the car must have less than 48K on the speedo and at least one month remaining on the original OEM warranty. DaimlerChrysler covers the nav, supercharger, sat radio (if installed by a MB dealer), most of the electronics and almost all of the mechanicals except normal wear and tear.

If you're going to keep it for a protracted period of time, I say go for the 63, far fewer moving parts to worry about. 55 guys will back me up on this, those things can lose power for a littany of reasons and can be a real PITA with cracked pistons and busted pumps.
Just buy gixxer's car and call it a day.

Leaning toward E-63
Thanks everyone for your comments in response to my post. I really appreciate your candid and honest replies, pro and con.
I am planning on keeping the car pretty much stock, except maybe an improved cold air box. And, with plans to keep it at least 6-7 years or so, I am really just looking for a sports sedan for everyday driving as opposed to track use. I have a heavily modified Z-06 which satisfies my need for speed on track days. With that said, I am leaning toward E-63.
Thanks again and after I make a purchase in the next few weeks, I'll probably be back on this thread for more advice.
Good day all, and thanks again!

I've driven both and there simply isn't a 15-20K+ difference in the cars, but hey, it's your money.

Also keep in mind, first E total revision since 2003 is announced next year for sale early 2010. Just a heads up since you are new to E-dom.
