I think so if you mean the transplant of the old button switches. Is there another method?

The paddle converter module makes this plug and play.

Agree it's a bit pricy so going this route. I think someone actually figured out how to make the new ones work by adding a resistor or transistor, however there were no details. If someone can fig it out it would be a much simpler install.

Yes, with the paddle converter module the AMG paddles are plug and play AND fully functional.

What year is your E55? you may not even need the converter module.

Newbee question

Hi, I have been reading through all the forum threads I could find regarding the shift paddle conversion. I am still not entirely sure what is needed in my case.

SL55AMG from 2003, with button shift on the steering wheel, which I assume is original. Do I need to do the Frankenstein procedure with a dremel drill, or can the converter turn it in to a plug and play solution?

Thanks in advance

welcome to the forum,

your SL55 can use the paddle converter (or the frankenstien method) . If you want more info on the converter module and/or info on modifying your wheel to accept paddles, send me a PM

Cheers,
Chris

p.s if you are looking for a quick solution, I happen to have a 2003 sl55 wheel that is already converted to paddles that is available.

Thanks Chris, I am very much interested in all the help I can get. I have got a dremel kit and can use my hands, however the parts may be difficult to acquire here. How much is the wheel you've got, and what colour is it?

Hi Peter,

It is black. Here is a picture. Where are you located? If you are in Europe, the paddle converter module is also available from comandonline.uk

Thanks Chris, I am in Dubai. I have had a look at commandonline.co.uk, and I think I will brave it and order the paddles and the converter unit. Is that all I will need?

The paddles and the converter are all the parts you need. The paddle converter comes with mounting screws for the paddles and a handy cutting template/go-nogo gauge for modifying the paddle pockets in your wheel.

Pay close attention to the connectors on the paddles you get. IF you get the set sold under part number A1712670046, you are assured that it is correct if you get a different set, make sure the "down" paddle has a longer harness and uses pin locations 1 & 3 in its connector housing. IF you end up with the wrong set, making it work is not particularly difficult , but it is an unnecessary level of bother.

If you want to send me a PM with your email address, I can send you some instructions for modifying your wheel

Chris

P.s. Tell Richard at comandonline that I said hi

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, guys..would an SL63 (3 Spoke/Aluminum inlay) wheel fit a non paddle CLS500? Is the VeDoc thing (428?) the only thing to get it to work?

What about the Steering Column module? Does that need to be changed at all?

There doesn't seem to be much information regarding this..

You (and anyone else hoping to get useful feedback to technical questions) should add more information to your "details" section (year, model and market). "W211" is not enough enough to answer this question. The W211 has used several paddle configurations that are year and model dependent with the year of implementation differing based on market in some cases (eg ... a european 2004 is likely to be configured the same as a US 2005).

so
what year is your car?
is it an AMG ?
what market was it built for?
did it come with steering wheel shift buttons?
