SL600 VS my cobra!
My cobra makes just a hair shy of 500 at the wheels... I ran with an SL600 looked to be 06 or newer from 0 to 160... We were almost dead even! I started to pull SLIGHTLY around 100. Now I know those cars are fast, but WTF!? My cobra should do 11.40s to 11.70s... was this SL chipped?

A well modded 600 will eat most things on a straight road. Chiromikey will know more of the details, but there is a s600 here (Lou's) in PHX that runs at near lightspeed. Something about 11 second 1/4 from what I understand...
Nice engine in your 'Stang! Supercharged?
If your car was running at its best then the Sl600 was probably chipped. Timeslips on Dragtimes show chipped Sl600s running as fast as 11.2.
The 11.9 time for a stock SL600 has been debated at length. Car and Driver recorded and reported that time but there are some reasons to believe they were testing a chipped car. Other magazines reported times of 12.5. Also, no owner of a stock SL600 has shown up with a timeslip in the 11.9 neighborhood.

Don't forget the Western madman. Treynor running consistant 11.5's with a simple ECU flash on the 03 S600.
It was chipped most likely.
Gosh I really want a TT12 now.

I think he was tuned... I have beat a couple new z06 vettes... not by much but none the less... This car was not going anywhere, bumper to bumper! both my buddy and I are huge AMG fans so we were both equally excited that it kept up. It was funny you could tell that both m and the other driver thought we were going to smoke one another.

My guess not stock. How does your E run against your Cobra (a bit of a tell tale sign with that comparison)? I think a stock E55 and SL600 would run pretty close up to the 110-120 range then the SL will pull. Right?

My S600 ran 11.97@114.7 bone stock with drag radials and 11.27@121.8 with the Renntech ECU/TCU so I bet that the car you raced was "chipped". These V-12's make massive amounts of torque so anything is possible.
11.972 is a great 1/4 mile, guys, but Stephen's "stock" car had a modified exhaust and, more importantly, drag radials. By "stock" I meant completely unmodified and running on street tires.
As you probably know, Housclass has the best time for an unmodified S600 on street tires and that was 12.298, which was 0.326 slower than Stephen's time. 0.222 of the 0.336 second difference between the two cars came in the first 60 feet, where drag radials would make the biggest difference.
My point here is not to quibble over the meaning of "stock" but to try to convey consistent and accurate info. And AFAIK no unmodified 600 car--CL, S, or SL--has yet to run a sub-12 time on street tires.
12.2s on a good track on a low air density day? Sure. 11.9s or better? Hasn't happened.

I dont quote magazine times. The test in C&D was a renntech car. I am referring to a 600 with proper tires on a proper track is capable of an 11.90+ I have witnessed with my own eyes an S600 (heavier) with just eisenmann touring mufflers run similar http://www.dragtimes.com/Mercedes-Be...lip-11391.html

okok some info on the cobra. It weight i believe 3700 lbs and I am on drag radials... We both went from a 20mph roll and I spun all through 1st, I assume he did also( he was on 19" wheels, so probably had PS2 or BFG street tires) my car is a 6 speed manual, however, it is geared tall(355's) I shift into third gear around 85. The race was so close it was a "drivers" race. Yes this cobra is fast, but it is rugged and and built for speed. The SL was just smooth and elegant getting to those speeds. Just an incredible car. I blew me away how effortlessly it appeared to accelerate to our top speed. I don't know what a stock SL600 weighs but I would assume a tuned SL600 and my 500 wheel cobra have very similar power to weight ratios. The car did NOT have exhaust. Both cars had two people in them. My cobra spanks my E55 pretty good, btw.
Here is my dyno, this was the 6th pull during tuning so I would guess it had a few more ponies in here, these cobras heat soak fast. Very different power band than my E55... not nearly as aggressive down low. Can anyone post a tuned SL600's dyno? Turbo vs super charged. I would be cool to compare the two dyno's since we can find out the weight of both.

Wow, sounds like a cool race. A stock SL600 is speed limited to just a touch over 155mph, so with speedo error its possible it was stock. As far as 1/4 times are concerned, with proper tires and launch an 11.90+ is possible on a stock SL600. Im not sure what your cobra traps? To put things into perspective I recently raced a few 600+hp cobras from a 40-150 MPH roll and slowly walk them at 120+
I thought stock limiter on the 600 was 135 mph?

stay away from an SL65 AMG
I just bought one of these cars, I cant believe what they do on the highway. They just push you back in your seat and they are sooo smooth. Not jerky like my CLS 55.. They dont seem as fast because of the lack of sound but when you look down the speedo says 100mph..
Another member was thinking of buying this car, but may have canceled out.. I'm tempted to Renntech this car and really turn it up.. I bought it to sell but I might have some fun first!!
It beats my CLS 55 with ASP pulley already.
Also, Does anyone know if they make a K&N filter for the SL600? They show one for the 06 models on the web but not 04??
