Fuel Consumption Comparo M5 and E63.E55, anyone have real data?
I may be picking up an M5 but one concern is the fuel consumption I hear its horrible. My E63 isnt great but I am used to it. On my E63 in NYC daily driving I get around 9-10mpg. On the highway maybe it gets 12-14 but thats doing 65 in 7th gear with no throttle input. I fill up 2 times per week but I do lots of driving city and parkway. I took a 2 hour trip and used cruise last week at 70mph and the best i recorded was 15mpg.
Every time I test drove the M5 (9 times) the dash displayed 5-7mpg it never went higher than that. I was in the 500 mode. I even drove in the 400 mode in the automatic mode and it still displayed a max of 7mpg. Range for the full tank was like 170 miles. With gas so high now and the relative small tank I will live at the pump I think
SO I dont know if the M5 is a good daily driver for me when I retire the E63. I see many members here own the M5 and AMG so I would like to have some of you guys chime in. I will not buy another AMG until they start making cars that drive and handle like an M

MB Forever thats good I wish I got that.
Its strange the M5 has 2 more cylinders but is lower in displacement and from my test drives it uses double the fuel. I cant justify this sitting in traffic and at speed 60mph and less without being ballz deep in the throttle.
Just curious if my experience with the M5 is accurate or if these cars at the dealer had their settings all screwed up

Man your car sounds like its below average. I have 20k miles. My car gets 8-9MPG on the drag strip. In the city 16-18, freeway at 70-90 in C 22-26 MPG. I have recorded 26 on several trips average is 16.9 over the 20k miles.

I have an M6, same S85 engine as an M5, and I drive relatively hard on a daily basis. That is, I run the RPM's up the range quite often and this is also based on 30-40 miles of mostly daily freeway driving. I average about 11 mpg.
Based on people that I know with M5's and M6's I drive my car harder and keep the RPM's higher so others' mileage may vary (more favorable).
Cylinder Head is the exception to this though

I average 19 mpg with my weekly driving. My commute is around 30 miles with half being freeway and I try to run it a bit on the on ramp. I always drive in sport and usually downshift when coming to a stop. I have to say that I noticed a large difference (+2mpg) after I had the car re-tuned by VRP/Powerchip. I have seen as high as 24 with a trip to Tucson.

I have an 07 e63 and seem to average 14-17 in the city and 18-24 on the highway. I dont get on it TOO often but seem to get better mileage then you are experiencing. If your mileage is that poor you might have another problem...

Just to clear up some of the confusion here, displacement isn't as relative to fuel consumption as rpm's. Our S85's inject fuel 1,000-2,000 more times per minute than AMG engines, and there is no supercharger to disengage.
