E55 then E63, now back to an E55
Constant I/C pump

On 2005:
Would it be beneficial for me to rig Johnson I/C pump to run continuously?
What would be the install process - power wire to ignition somewhere??
Thanks!

Yes.. Definitely rig it to run continuously.. It makes a big difference especially when you are sitting still in a dyno room or at the staging lanes.

You can grab an Accesory 12V power from within the engine compartment, driver side, near firewall at the base of the windshield.. Lift the plastic box to expose the fuses and relays.. there is a thick RED wire with BLUE Stripe. Tap into that wire. It will only provide power when the accessory key is on or the ignition is on.

i think i'm the only one who disagrees with this. not because running the i/c pump all the time doesn't help, but because in my testing (and i don't know of anyone else that has researched this) i discovered the ecu runs the pump almost continuously already. since that's the case, there's no reason to bother with the extra wiring.

The newer models and those flashed use the pump much less, because they were replacing them left and right and thought it was just the lifespan. It is a simple job and really no negative that i can think of. I haven't done mine, but I haven't had cooling issues yet.

you sure about this? i think you may be confusing the i/c pump with the secondary air injection pump because that's exactly what that recall flash did for that pump.

with regards to the i/c pump, i know the newer models got a revised pump but i've never seen or heard any evidence to say that the ecu runs the pump any less.

10000% yes!! Wanna protect that ECU at all times. I have mine hooked up this way and she runs great!

I really saw a nice difference in reduction of IAT's with just this simple mod. Meaning IAT's were reduced much more quickly.

do you attribute the reduction in iat's to the new pump or the hardwire? i have my i/c pump (along with the rad fan and heat exchanger fans) hardwired to a switch in the cabin and realized i shouldn't have bothered after i discovered that the ecu runs the i/c pump continuously already.

I'm guessing there was a running change, as my 04 needs to see boost or slightly elevated water temps to initialize. I would love to rig a display LED that would indicate when the pump was on to see. Perhaps a vendor could come up with a kit including a relay and LED.....HINT....HINT.

Perhaps when the HE was upgraded (05? 06?) they programmed a different pump engagement strategy?

BTW, I love your reservoir and secondary HE setup.

thanks re my cooling set-up.

you would be the only other person i know of that's actually tested their pump. how did you determine that your i/c pump needs boost or elevated water temps to come on?

By putting my hand on it to see if it was running.

The pump wouldn't energize in Park until I revved the poop out of it to get water temps up.

On the dyno, it didn't turn on during warm-up (CPT brings up the water temps to 80c min to get car into closed-loop) and finally energized when he brought the revs up and the SC clutch engaged. I'm assuming it was SC-related, but it could have been a closed-loop trigger as well...

After that, it was pretty much on all of the time.

lol! i've found that the only time my i/c pump isn't on is during cold start mode.

same here..

on a morning run.. the beast feels strong but its because the engine is still cool.

I have tried to punch it before she receaches 80c and I can feel boost to about 4k and then the komp clutch disengages..

I let off the gas and punch it again.. and power is there.

In my case I know that my IC Pump only starts after it hits a certain temp after that.. I have no issues at all.

I guess running the pump all the time will only help during morning start up.

I manually touch my heat exchanger and IC pump hoses on a daily basis and once the car is warn.. it running all the time.
