+1, dash materials were below even the Corvette's, which are abyssimal. I've driven a few last-gen CTS' and Nissan definitely makes a better interior. The new model, however, is a few lightyears ahead. Caddy REALLY stepped up to the plate, you absolutely cannot compare the two.

I had a 1st Gen V - I did not think it felt cheap. It had no rattles or parts falling off. I did have problems with the diff - that was plenty. But cheapness was never one of the things that bothered me. The interior [especially the dash] was certainly plain and spartan-looking, but so is a C63 inside. I don't mind that in a sport-oriented vehicle.
Anyway - it just seems easy to lump all American cars into one group and call them cheap. I'll always stick up for the ones that deserve it.

i recently checked out the current gen CTS and W204 C-class. C-class had a far cheaper looking interior with inferior plastic everywhere.
i'm hoping MB doesn't cheapen the hell out of W212 E-class..

Admittedly this is a third person account, but a friend who's also an enthusiast (Porsche and Audi guy right now) commented that at the recent NYIAS, he had a chance to take a close look at the CTS (not sure if it was a V, did they have one there?) and he was very impressed by it inside and out.
So given the man drives an '06 Audi A8, I'd take his comment that the CTS was well screwed together and had a nice interior with more than a grain of salt...
