New E55 Owner...Clunk in Right Rear
Hey everybody,
Recently bought an 03' with 40,000 miles, the car is perfect except for a suspension clunk noise in rear or right rear when going on over medium to large bumps. Maybe this is common problem.
I am an car nut and home mechanic and I have a two-post car lift at my house. Can I lift this car without doing anything? or do I have to disable the air suspension or disconnect the battery?
TIA,
Daryl

I'm not sure this is the problem but read this thread to see if you had the same problem as Skeeter...

Happens to me all the time when I go over speed bumps too fast. Meaning slower then a crawl.
Honestly don't think it's a prob. Think it's an Airmatic thing.
Perhaps one of the pros will chime in.

If its a more pronounced KNOCK like a lose link or worn bushing thats a different story.

I had the same problem. It was only when the right rear wheel hit a bump. When I took it in, the SA said the right rear shock was worn. Not an uncommon problem, according to him. They replaced both rear shocks under warranty and everything is fine now. When I took the car in, my mileage was around 36k.

Mine did the same thing when going over bumps on the right rear and brought it to the dealer to get it fixed. They said it was broken and replaced it through my warranty. Good Luck

Well AirMatic has a thump sound when you go over speed bump style bumps. That is normal. Its kind of a thumping from the trunk area almost. Its worse on lowered cars as you are working in the lower ranges of the air shocks travel.

Any comments on putting it on a Lift without disconnecting the battery??

i have the same issue..
i noticed it more when I changed to bigger wheels (19's)
Having had a similar issue with a 03 G35, the shock absorber was worn.
You can easily tell its only the passenger rear side. Makes sense, since this monster really uses that side when taking off.

Its the shocks. I noticed the same thing on my car. Very easy fix. Just 2 bolts and it pops right off. I put the car on my lift and noticed the right rear shock is a little damp. Not dripping though.

i too have noticed this, more so when i go over a bump at a higher than comfortable speed... i did research here and found quite a few people mentioned this so i figured it was somewhat normal... i tend to be more careful around bumps and don't really drive the car very hard, so i think the shocks should be ok... lets hope so!

Uh-oh... Yes, read my thread of woe. The dealership should cover under warranty; in any event the repair cost me under $1k out of pocket. Find out quickly, another E55 racked up over $5k in damage by driving on it. Ended up wrecking the differential casing and a bunch of other stuff under the car.
If it is a clunk, right rear, and can be replicated by going over bumps or by sudden acceleration and braking, I'd be $ its the rear subframe connector on the passenger side. You'll only see it when the car is up on a lift and the rear tires removed. I posted pics of what to expect in my thread... Let me know if you need more info.

I hear the thump going over speed bumps only. not during breaking or abrupt acceleration.
