I believe that the OEM Paper Air Filter part number is the same in 320/500/55 engines. That being said, if the filters all flow the same, my thought is that the 55 engine would be hungry for more air to feed the beast, which is why I went with K&N.

I had K&N in my CLK430 for 40,000 miles, no prob. So far in the CLK55 it's been 3,500 miles, no problem. Better throttle response and more growl on the top end.

Plus, unlike Greens, they fit perfectly with no warping.

I'd definitely like to see some data on that. Just looking at the OEM filter, it's hard to believe that it out flows a K&N. Not that K&N is god of filters of course.. jJust sayin.

I would be curious if anyone actually dynoed their car with the stock air filters and then put K&N or other aftermarket filters in to see if they actually make a difference in the real world. Some of these filter manufacturers have pretty big HP gain claims.
