Ran a Modded 335i Last Night
the light turns green and i roll out somewhat aggressively. the 335 hits it and probably gets 1/2 to 3/4 cars on me. i was already in S mode so i just hammer the gas pedal. i made up the difference and probably put another 3 cars on him to about 100 or so.
we ended up catching another light and i rolled down the window to chat briefly. he said he had some kind of stage 2 package (evosport/evotech?). he didn't realize that i was driving an AMG and was surprised when i reeled him in.
you can make 400HP with tune and exhaust alone, and those cars are lighter, about 3600lbs than an E63. from a dig too, the E55 is faster. hmmm. maybe he was running on pump? or closer to stock?
i know my M3 thats tuned (full boltons no S/C) makes about 380HP with gears and i can murder most 335s and keepup with an S55AMG to about 100 froma dig....
in any case, i'm not here to argue. i'm just relaying an account of an event which happened last night. fwiw, i also have the vr530 package.

all im saying is i would have expected a true stg2 335i to be more on par with a "stock" E55/E63.
this is all. good kill...

to be honest, i don't know the 335 tuning market very well, so i cannot really comment on the outcome one way or another.i will, however, comment on a lightly modded E63 v. a lightly modded M5, once i get my other car back from the shop. that is, if the wifey will line up against me.
i can tell you about the tuning of the 335. i still own a BMW and have only recently as of last november gotten a Benz.
the 335is can be tuned more like EVOs/STIs. there is a variance of programs and it all depends on the fueling. if you map the car for 93 octane or higher, you will get a lot more power but the biggest problems with that car is
1. heatsoak at higher temps/humidity
2. gearing
3. tuning since the car can make up to 30-40 more or less RWHP depending on tuner and/or the gas it was mapped for.
i see a ton of these 335's around here so i'm sure i'll line up with another one in the near future. i'll be waiting for the day when i bite off more than i can chew. win or lose, i can appreciate a fast car.

*cringe*
and even if you run a modified one, i dont think you would get pulled on much if at all. theres simply no room for bigger turbos in the engine bay, nor is there room for any type of engine swap.
a full boltons 335 would make maybe 400 to the wheels on race gas. maybe 410 if you have a freak since that car was tremendously underrated. add gears, Drag radials, exhaust, downpipes and the works. i mean i think it would be pretty even with your VR530. if u go to a VR570 i dont think theres a 335i right now in america that can touch you.

at the time, i only had intake exhaust and gears and i pulled on my buddys M3 which had intake, exhaust, pullies, headers, and a tune.
also ran even with a dinan stg2 M3 which according to dinan consists of intake, exhaust, throttle bodies, software, and 3.91 gears.
i have 4.10s. because of the nature of the high revs of this car and the fact that it makes no power under about 4k rpms, the point of the gears is to get you in that sweet spot much faster. off the lines are more fun. as are 40-120 rolls because im around 5500 rpms in 2nd gear just in my powerband.
the thing with 4.10s is if u go F/I the car becomes a bit tricky to drive. gotta really ease into it a good bit for first, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear. however, NA full boltons, i dont have many traction issues, esp with 285PS2s in the rear.
with these cars the S54 motor is so close to being maxed out its hard to get a lot of power without going F/I. headers are probably your biggest NA mod yielding 20-25RWHP depending on the tune you go with. cams as well.
i did intake/exhaust together.
then gears/coilovers
then pullies/throttle bodies.
and finally headers/cams/tune.
bunch of little stuff inbetween but those were the main performance mods and although there is noticible difference, the biggest difference i felt was gears, followed by headers/cams/tune.
that and losing weight on the wheels. love my dinan wheels. 19 lbs. 19x9.5F 19x10 R.

cost was around 1800 installed (600 for ring and pinion and 1200 for labor and all the other parts). cheaper than the ~2500 for a fully built diff. and then u gotta deal with install for about 300 and a core deposit by sending back your stock gears to even get that 2500 price. or else its 4000. i still have my stock ring+pinion incase i ever need to go to it because im F/I or sell the car etc.
apples vs oranges.
And an M3 is still technically a 3 series. too.

Thats interesting to know. He(my little brother) has been contemplating the 4.10s for a while but decided to go the nitrous route. Have you dynoed the car? What kinda power you make?

Do not underestimate how quick the 135i and 335i can be when properly tuned. They repositioned themselves to appeal to the enthusiast market and really succeeded. With one of these properly tuned as an option, I would not go for an Audi short of an RS4 (slower but great car) or a C63 (faster) and both of these are FAR more expensive.
Does anybody know how much hp the stock internals on the 335 can hold? Also, how is the 335xi? My little brother wants to get a 335 and we're not sure whether to go with the i or the xi. Obviously, we're gonna use it for street racing so I'm figuring that if the awd ain't that much of a power zapper, it might be best on the streets. We're also thinking about putting some laughing gas in there so I want to see if a 400bhp 335 could handle a 100 shot of n2o. Has it been done? And yeah, this is an MB forum but you guys know your *****. If I post this on an e90 forum I'll probably get "y0 ur shyz will b 0uttttt s0n" so I'd rather ask for advice here.
