Cold Air Intake

From the C32 forum.

If it works like it claims for the V6 compressed engines, I wonder how would it work on our V8s...

Doubt the gains, sorry but I have done this before.

Here is FANGS intake on SLK32 - gains were 12-15RWHP on a Stage II car.

Here is the same design on E55 - currently in testing.

I like the current setup that's being tested. Any h.p. or cost figures ? Thanks!

Are the filters tucked behind the bumper due to rain concerns?

Probably there so they don't block the radiator from doing its job.

But the pipes still run in front of the radiator.

Polished ones looks good, black chromed finish would look even better!

It was just a guess really. My next guess though, would be that the pipes probably block less surface area of the radiator than conical filters

Your worst nightmare...
Wouldn't samco hoses do a much better job than deflecting the heat?

imo the only way to go is hard hose and plastic for the straight runs.

Right, Samco is somewhat of a flexible silicone hose and it is Heat wrapped.

isolates the filters from engine bay, allow them to pull in fresh air

Actually, it does.
Other than right behind the front grill, behind the front bumper and front fenders are the two places you'll get the "coldest" air.

The pipes are stainless. Which is a very good heat insulator.

I like the look better than misc. silicone hoses tied by clamps and transition pieces.

A little update from the SRT forum...

I like the Y-pipe idea, but not sure about cutting the stock surge tanks though...

inside the engine bay there are seals that isolate the inside of the motor from outside elements, putting the filters behind the bumper allows the engine to get air from outside of the engine bay, the same air the runs over the radiators from the opening of the lower mesh portion of the bumper and front grille. Look at the pic of the black E55 and you will see the seal.

They came out about 4 years ago. The biggest unit at that time, only flowed enough air for about 250HP.

And also they are just to big for our cars, but they do look nice.

Since our intakes are already at the grill I don't see the benefit, regardless of where the filters are in-line ?

I think the benefit is getting rid of the choke point that is at the inlet for the intakes. If you've seen it, not only is it blocked by plastic "fins", but it is small compared to the diameter of the rest of the intake tubing... Not to mention the bottleneck in the drivers side intake tube just past the radiator.

This is my friend Evan's Crossfire, and it was super quick when he ran me. At the time he just had the needs wings intake and he picked up a significant amount of hp over stock for an intake. Definately there is a bottle neck and it looks like it is being addressed.
