Way, way back, I used to do some drag racing in the Phillippines on an improvised track that was part of an uncompleted housing development. It was basically a long straight residential street with curbs and no houses.
The crowd would surround the two competing cars with some of them actually standing close enough to look in the window to see what you were doing. Others would stand in the middle of the street, maybe 100ft. from the start and move out of the way as the cars came at them. It was just insane!
Eventually, a guy on a bike got killed which closed the "track".
