I am closing in on a year of ownership with my M6 and as ItalianStallion wrote, its a real involving experience that will keep you coming back for more.
I also own a fairly modded 997TT and I still miss my M6 even when I am blazing down the road in the turbo.
There is something to be said about driver involvement and 10 roaring cylinders injecting at over 1000 times per second. The exhaust note in stock format is exceptional along with the brake and steering feel.

I went to look at the M5 at the local BMW dealer and when I suggested to the sales guy I was interested in the M5 he looks at me and the other sales guys nearby and laughs in my face that he cant get one for me to test drive and if interested gonna have to wait atleast a year. It will be a LONG time before I ever think about going back.
A better option would have been to say "hey, thanks for working with me, I'll be in touch." Then, come back with your shiny new M5 (purchased somewhere else) and say, "remember, me? I have to go driving now..."
As good as that may feel it is still a waste of time.
