Heartbreaking :(

Ok...well its not as bad as many others have experienced...but merging from one freeway to another, had a car on each side of me...the suv ahead of me moves over to reveal...someones car jack in the middle of the road.

I had no place to go, no I wasn't tail gating, moving at freeway speeds makes things come up fast...

Insurance states it as an 'unavoidable' event, so luckily my premium won't go up...

Too bad, I would guess $3500. But more importantly a real time lesson, I too had the same type of incident about 2 years ago and it forever changed my "following distance". Nothing worse than the "CRAP!" I am trapped feeling as you plow over whatever is in your path. Not trying to preach but 20 feet (one car length) would have made a difference in my case. I sympathize with you, cause I know the feeling, so drive safe all the time, go fast when you can and follow no one.

As long as you are okay
The bumper should be a easy replacement.

i feel your pain i was on my way out to HIN in L.A. to hang with Harbor Motorsports and the MyMB gang. On the 5 Fwy a BMW E39 540i was driving in front of me and pooped out a headlight, it then went under her car and hit my bumper and bounced up and hit my headlight and then hit my windshield. cracked bumper, cracked headlight, and chipped windshield. i think the laminx tint on my headlights kept it from shattering and the tint on my windshield (yes my windshield lol) help that from cracking...

That really sucks, sorry to hear about it. On another note, it sounds like you did the right thing in terms of just plowing through it. From your description you were in heavy traffic, trying to take evasive action could have caused you or someone else to have a much worse accident.

Same principle applies to deer on the road, do as much as you can safely, but if it just jumps out in front of you, drive through it. I have a friend that had a deer jump out infront of him, he swerved hard to avoid the deer but ended up loosing complete control and flew off the rode, rolling the car a few times.

OOoooooh, I forgot to tell them that the CF lip was obliterated and blown all over the freeway

As for plowing right through it, that's exactly what I did. It was total slow motion but I wanted to make sure I didn't hit it with a tire as that would be disastrous.

Update: They are replacing all the belly pans as each was messed up. They are also replacing the upper exhaust pipe...only on one side or I'd have them upgrade (if I could find one). It had a nice dent (nothing that I think would have affected the breathing of the car but who am I to question )They sent the quote to the insurance company so I'm waiting to hear if they approve the cost. Will let you know.

Thanks again everyone...

Too much fastness... I kid. Glad to see you're okay, Brad. I expect to see you and the new front and CF splitter at SLO in November.

I had a very similar event in traffic, despite a very conservative following distance, while driving an Audi TT coupe a few years ago on the Washington Beltway. I had to decide whether to straddle a large concrete block or run over it with a wheel. I chose the former, and my poor TT instantly emptied its precious bodily fluids all over the tarmac from the huge hole that had been punched in the oil pan. I put in the clutch instantly, and turned the engine off as I coasted to the side of the road. As I got out to survey the carnage, a huge pool of oil formed on the shoulder next to my car. Sometimes, you just cannot escape a road hazard.

I'm glad your insurance company is helping you out. I try not to even make claims on stuff like this, just to avoid being dropped or having my premium go up (despite what they say). Good luck with it.
