But why would you need everything to settle down if you are basically buying it at MSRP when you put a deposit down? I doubt the price of it will ever go below MSRP.

I think t-bone is saying that the point of putting a deposit is so that you pay only MSRP...
The ones with premiums are the ones that people cancel or the extra cars that come in.

2002 E55
In San Francisco, any of the desirable AMG models ( S, CL, SL,) are automatically marked up $20K plus, talking with my dealer the E55 will be the same for at least 2years. ( But we are paying $2.19 a gallon for premium gas in the city and $800Kmin for a house!)

I think it is going to be a while before the "hoopla" dies down. The W210 E55 was in high demand for three years and only became fairly available in '02 as it was the last model year.

E55 Demand
After the initial year is sold out at or near MSRP, I think demand for the E55 will depend on how ugly the new 5 series BMW is. Like the 7 series, if it is not welcomed by BMW aficionados, it may take 1-2 years for the 5 series sales to approach expectations. If it is visually appealing, the new M5 with V-10 and 500 hp or more may hurt E55 sales. But that won't be for about 1 1/2 years after I take delivery on my W211.

My assessment is that much of the E55 hoopla was a function of the economy. Lots of people were flush with disposable cash.
While the highest income ranges are more immune to economic fluctuations, I don't think most E55 buyers are 7 figure income people.
As such, I'm guessing "hoopla half life" will be 50% of what it was with the 210.
...which is good if you're late getting a deposit down.

I think (hope) that the 'hoopla' is only for the first year. The W210 E55 was imported around 500 per year and I think they are bringing in much more like 800+ for the W211 E55.
