Quote: These are 2 separate issues (pun intended) IMO.

The car runs hotter than desired, among other reasons, due to emissions requirements. A t-stat should be viewed as an additional rather than substitutive mod.

Separating the systems does provide the absolute lowest IATs, according to the hard data out there.

With the ECU being so sensitive to temp changes, both coolant and IAT, I think that the best way to go for performance is to do both.

1) Lowering the fan engagement speed and upgrading the T-stat help with controlling the coolant temps.

2) Adding the larger HE, upgraded pump, and separating the systems will help with IATs.

With these cars pulling THREE stages of timing for both IAT and coolant, wouldn't both be logical?
they definitely are two separate issues and they should have been kept that way from the factory. however, we need to remember that heat in the cobustion chamber is a good thing. imho, much lower than 180* water temps provides less than efficient temps to make power and under "normal" ambient conditions our cooling systems are typically more than adequate to keep engine coolant temps in check.

Quote: engine coolant temps have never been a problem and the lower temp t-stat was a bandaid for the i/c coolant mixing with engine coolant before we had alternatives. I'm not sure why you're fighting such a simple, inexpensive, and proven solution???
Of course I know the T stat is not a H/E mod, that is not my point here. Proven solution? Have not seen that yet.. Simple yes, I agree, but why do it if does not need to be. I keep asking the same question.. Where do they mix??? Sharing an expansion tank is not mixing, at leat in the sense that heats up the I/C system!! Where is the elusive extra T?

I drove the hell out of a new 09 ZR1 today and then studied the coolant I/C system... That car has 3 H/E and also shares the same expansion tank at 638hp.. What does that mean? Probally nothing but was interseting to study.. I expected to see a seperate surge tank, but no it is shared..

i do agree that there isn't going to be a lot of mixing, but if you're driving the car for an extended period there will be contamination. and yes, the solution has been proven to provide a benefit for iat's. even marcus showed a 10* drop in iat's and that was on a dyno where air flow cannot come close to matching air flow on the road. and in the realm of mb/amg ecu's, a 10* drop in iat's can account for a huge difference in power. and given the fact that we're stuck with a crappy i/c (unless we want to spend $15k on slr style i/c's), we need every degree drop in iat's we can get...especially if they come as easily and cheaply as separating the systems.

now if you want to compare the zr1, if we had 3 h/e's and a more efficient i/c i highly doubt any of us would be studying iat's as much as we have over the past few years and i doubt we would care if the sytems were tied together.

Very good info but which way is proven? I'm up to do it eiter way just don't want to waste my time for no difference.
