Increased Air intake to the Supercharger

Ok…Friday Food for Thought….

This is a question for all…. And I may be retarded for asking but….

As I was in my garage poking around my engine, looking at the 2 bilateral intake tubes and their location it got me thinking….

Would increased airflow increase power??? In theory it makes sense….

Has anyone done or looked into removing the smaller / inner head light and maybe making a custom carbon fiber cone or even using the light housing and modifying it (removing all its guts and hollowing it out)… then connecting it to your intake tubes… creating a much larger ram air port….

My luck, something like this would totally f*** up my car but I just wanted to throw this out there for thought since there is not much on the market for E55cold air intakes or modified intakes with out spending big $...

This would give a ram air effect for the intake charge, but this will not be that helpful because the s/c is forcing the air into the engine. On normally aspirated car the ram air effect will be helpful because of the absence of forced indection. Ram air is very helpful at high speeds.
Doing what you said will not hurt but the benefits will not be that great on a force induced engine.

No, sh*t dude.... here I was thinking I was smart as hell for thinking this up... Guess not.... my hat goes off to you brotha.

Was their any change in the cars performance, sound, ... any problems...???

I have seen pics of someone that somehow modified thier tubes and cramed cone intake filters infront of the radiator but that is about it...

I just know in the past with my other cars, my intakes always gave my cars more throat and a little boost... but this is my first supercharged car...

Thanks! I have had zero problems and I've driven through rain many times. I didn't notice a significant change in sound from inside the cabin but I would think you would hear more sc whine from in front of the car (I run much less boost than modded E55s so my charger is quieter). It may have been mental but it feels like it pulls harder at higher speeds My inlets were very small and when you shut the hood it would block them. Now they are opened up and free flowing so it has to be good for something right? It makes for a good intimidation factor lol Now Imagine if two GT35R's were sitting behind the inlets drooooool

Silicone hose, the same diameter as the E55 airbox inlets. The clear plastic pieces you see in the pics have been relpaced by brushed aluminum piping

I've seen Ahmad's intake, and it looks sweet.

The problem with the E55 is the loss of high beams...too many deer around here.

Ive got a RAM AIR scoop on my car...but its still in the works and still being tested...It will only fit the 2006 E55s as far as we know, but we will need a 2005 E55, to see if it works on those, we know for a fact it will not work on the 03/04 model E55s, this also works on the E63s... Ill take a picture of it and post it in a few minutes....

heres a few pictures...this is not the FINISHED product

I live in Lincoln Park - I would be flat-out risking my life going to the lakehouse, however.

I doubt you will see gains on the dyno. The car has to have air forced in to see a difference

Yeah I dynoed it, but not before/after tho.
Don't think it will make much of a difference on the dyno...Unless the fan is directly in front of the inlets.

Here is mine. They were repainted to black now...red was too flashy.

This is very interesting! I just ordered the V8 Kompressor airboxes from VRP for My NA 5.5 C55 and was wondering If I can do something like this??

You realize of course, your blocking a substantial portion of your radiator to direct a bit of extra air. incremental gain of air - incremental loss of cooling = net gain or loss?

Yeah I have seen the ram air scoops on a m5. If I can remember correctly the gains were like 16hp.
Now what is the reason these will not fit a 03 e55

M5 is NA, E55k is force induction (not sure if this makes a difference here though...)
no direct gains have been shown yet that i know of, even the airboxes are been disbuted by some if any good gain can be seen from them

lastly not much info on wether the people that have them have been successful, or not. Butt dyno is not considered credible by some .

Maybe a good area to look at is other super charged cars and th eeffect of bigger intake on them

I don't see any gains from this mod, as a previous poster mentioned- you're blocking your radiator for a small gain to the intake. I've seen projects like this several times in turbo apps (supras, dsm's, etc) w/large intercoolers that blocked the radiators and the results were pretty detrimental to the cars cooling system. I would think for this mod a large puller fan would be needed to offset the decrease in airflow.
