Can someone fill me in on more tricks? Excluding taking out the seats putting in lexan windowds and stuff that would make an Mercedes a POS car without the lux


My E55 diet thus far........

I just put 16.8 lb rear 18x9 Kosei rims on my E55 and the total weight went from 54lbs (19 inch Iforge daytonas + 275s PS2s) to 43 lbs (Mickey Tompsons 18 inch 265s w/ Kosei rims)....this is down from about 56 with the stockers...

So I lost 13 x 4 wheels = 52lbs
Evo Rotors (all 4) = 35 lbs
Underhood plastic parts/stripping removed = 5 lbs
Rear Truck cover + tools & emergency kit = 20 lbs
14 lb battery vs. 55 stock = 41 lbs
Floor mats = 5 lbs

- 158 lbs (with unsprung reduction of 87 lbs). Using an angular physics calculation thats like 147 lbs of sprung weight (1.7x multiplier)...adding them up its like - 213 lbs. Which should be 2 tenths off the 1/4. We shall see.

Does anyone else have any weight reduction techniques other than Aitkens or south beach for the driver? My '03 didn't come with a spare.

The last stuff I can think of would be a voltphreaks 4lbs battery and CF hood but its $$$ costly.

 

Resonator/cats delete replaced with aluminum pipings can save you a few lbs .
Aftermarket mufflers should be lighter than stockers as well.
CF trunk.

 

Lot of weight in the exhaust. I would look hard there. Keep water low or empty in the washer fluid bottle. Lose body weight!

PS, what battery you running?

 

I think I have an oddesy or perhaps optima...I forget, have to open the truck. The Exhaust system is the culprit...perhaps I can lose 80lbs there with a side pipe, lol.

 

Not quite "lot of weight", but you can probably save ~20lbs on the exhaust/pipings.

Reduce unsprung weight make more of a difference, which you have already done. Weight reductions from the exhaust modifications would be just more a bonus on top of the performance gain.

I kept the stock battery. More weight to the rear, more traction.

 

I've always thought about removing the passenger seat and the back seat before heading to the strip. Has anyone done this?

 

You can pull out the passenger seat and rear seat on track days. Front seats are about 60-75lbs each.

 

How do you do that? What tools are needed? I looked at it for 3 minutes and gave up :-(

 

Not sure if this is true, but the dealer told me that the 211 E55's already have a carbon fiber trunk.

 

Why dont you pretent that you took them off and take a tenth off your time or better yet take your engine out and do some pulls thats should shave a bit of weight off lol. You have to think, though, to what extent are you willing to go to shave weight off. Are you going to give up luxuries or the look of your car to save weight? To each his own.

Is removing weight absolutely necessary? There's so much power this car that a 100-pound reduction may seem negligible? Has anyone done any BEFORE and AFTER 1/4 mile runs?

Saving weight for daily driving is expensive. For race day drags the most significant weight is fuel weight. 180lbs full. When my gas gauge says empty, I still have roughly 5 gallons left - 40lbs. Skin it down even further and thats easy weight to lose.

BTW I added up all the crap I have in the car on a daily basis, about 35 lbs. Don't forget side pockets all around, map pockets, seatbacks, glove box, center and middle console (F&R)...sheesh all that stuff adds up.

is enough i feel, anything else and your just been unreasonable to what type of car you own.

if you want to run fast times, just ship your car to a fast track with good weather and good prep and there’s your fast times, with out doing all the other stuff or even heavy modding

it I think its cool to see what some people have come up with and see if its ok with u or fits your needs, so continue the talks

 

Everyone that has ever taken a Honda Civic to the track has done that.

 

Depends how extreme you want to go and how much $$ you want to spend. I have had my Black Series on a diet and still working on cutting the pounds.

Remove winshield washer fluid resevoir and pump.

Remove sound dedoning material in the trunk, you can even remove the finishing panels back there, I removed mine but opted to reinstal the pretty stuff but leave deadoning padding out.

Battery: I bought a 15 pound carbon fiber battery from Braille Auto (saved 30lbs)

Seats: There are lighter seats out there if you want to sacrafice all the bells and whistles on factory seats. I have a set of carbon fiber Sparcos that weigh just over 16.5 pounds each including mounting brackets. (set saved me 112 pounds) you can find high quality inexpensive lightweight seats that will not cost you an arm and a leg but still save you 75 plus pounds.

Wheels: Invest in a set of lightweight alloys or Dymag carbon fiber wheels, my Dymags weigh 15.6 front and 16.4 rear (set saved me over 40 pounds), these light weight wheels equate to lots of HP as well as better handling abd braking as well.

Cats: get rid of you primary cats if possible, they weigh a ton.

Titanium bolts/screws: I began replacing lots of steel bolts and screws with titanium ones wherever it could be done safely. Ti bolts are not cheap but the weight savings add up pretty quickly, to date I figure I have cut 12 pounds.


To date I have cut about 300 pounds from my car that I can account for. I did not factor in cats because I'm not sure if the larger diameter stainless X-pipe I added negated the cat delete weight loss. but I also added 70 pounds with my roll bar, but after all is said and done factoring in everythin including wheels I would assume I am saving 260-285 pounds at the scale over my car in stock form.

 

Anybody can take crap out of their car to make it lighter. But the real tricky thing is finding parts that will do the same job just weigh less. Like taking out your floor mats and truck plastic and parts in the engine bay is make the car look half a$$ed. The way jrcart is doing it is the way it should be done. If you take a part off, replace it. Im all for weight reduction lke lightweight batteries, carbon fiber trimmings, lighter wheels (a huge plus), even a lexan rear window would take away from anything, but Im not about to give up any luxuries for it. If I wanted that I would kept my Evolution and gutted it.

 

Who keeps stuff in there All of my compartments are empty except for registration & proof of insurance.

 

One of the reasons why we bought E55s was because we wanted a fully loaded luxury car with all the amenities but still can "go fast." We would be going in a totally opposite direction of this by removing the essentials from the car. If we wanted go-go-fast down the 1/4 mile, we could have just bought a honda civic (example), slap on some big turbos and some racing slicks, and act like teenagers all over again!

 

Whatever they are smoking, tell them to pass it over.

The basics: ltw battery, spare, exhaust, and wheels. Then the next level is racing seats and c/f panels. You can go as far as you want, there are people that strip the entire interior which I think is stupid for a benz. But to each their own.

I may have a pair of gunmetal 18x9 kosei's wrapped with 245 BFG d/r's (very little tread left) for sale if anyone is coming to MIR and wants it. I am going to be testing out my 16" CCW's wrapped in MT ET Street Radials (this setup is actually heavier than the koseis, I was surprised)
