If I was in town I would definitely be there. If you don't have any plans on the 3rd let me know and I'll meet you up there. I would like at least one more practice day before Famoso...I definitely need it.

I don't know hopw many tips you want to take from me, I have never run at Willow before so my first few sessions are going to be slow going while trying to learn the track. There are going to be several locals that run the track on a regular basis attending, those are the guys you and more importantly I am going to be watching and trying to shorten my learning curve on that track. My superbike racing experience has tought me how to pick up on tracks very quickly, but there are still lots of little things that locals and regulars know, little secrets that could can take hundreds of laps to figure out on your own sometimes, but by following (or at least trying to) one of these guys you can tap their years of knowledge and apply it on your first outing.

I think there will be another 335i coupe going on the 3rd that I have run against before. I think he ran a 12.3. So it will be great to see how he runs. Maybe his tuner will be going with another car also? That would be nice to see the various results.

On a side note: The other coupe always seems to launch better than me with his Hoosier 275/40/17 drag radials. He runs them below 10psi at times. I am running bias ply 17" Mickey Thompson ET Streets. They just don't feel stable when I am going down the track. Especially at anything below 20psi.The car sways, etc. I had to let off a couple of times because I got down right scary. With the 245/35/19's radials in front, I wonder if I would get better results with radials like his in rear instead? What kind of DRs are the quickest AMGs running. When I ran my 11.9 my 60' time was a pretty unspectacular 1.875 seconds. Most were 1.9 and above.

I ran the MT ET streets for a season and they hooked great, Right around 20lbs, 60' ft time in the 1.6's, Now Im running the Hoosiers, only did 1 track day with them so far but nailed a 1.70 60'. FWIW the wheels I run can be made to fit your MBZ's very easy, We also have 17" front runners 'Skinnies" due out in the next few weeks as well. If any of you are interested in these wheels feel free to pm me.

So are the bias ply ET Streets more radical or better gripping? If you notice, these don't have the tread grove like the ones in the picture above. Here you can see in the pictures I am comparing the ET Streets and the Nitto 555Rs.

You need all the traction you can get when trying to get a car in the 11s without a limited slip differential!

the et street radials have a similar tread pattern to the 555r's. i'm sure the bias ply offer a little better grip aside from having a softer sidewall to allow sidewall loading. however, that's only a guess since i don't change out front tires for the track and there's no way i'm going to run bias ply tires out back while having radials up front.

many have run mid 1.6's on the m/t radials and iirc, ahmad has run low 1.5's!

Do you think running the bias ply slicks in the back with the low profile 19" radials in front may be causing the instability/swerving?

Damn, if I could cut a 1.6 I would be running a 11.6-11.7 second ET!, and my MPH tends to go up with better traction, since I can't launch with full power as it stands right now.

I run the 255/50-16 hoosiers with an E500 16" wheel. They hook great and most hardcore racers that I run with prefer them to the MT's. The MT's however last maybe twice as long. I'm on my 3rd set so far in 1 year time. I do run lots of events though. I'll pm you on the front skinnies... very nice.

pics of hoosiers

You can see from the rear view(driving pressure 32 lbs psi) that the hoosiers have only 2 lines on the tire. That's the minimum needed to make these DOT legal, although not legal for highway use. The rubber is soft enough to sink your fingernail into it very easily. Maybe too soft for durability, but the best tire I have found so far. I usually run about 15lbs psi or less. Swaying can happen but you need to find the exact pressure that rides that fine line. Also remember as your tires pressure will constantly fluctuate at the track depending on temps. That's why you will see racers always check pressure before runs.

BTW- my wheel/tire combo weigh about 42lbs each mounted and aired to 32 psi. Hemi what does your combo weigh? Look real light.

Mickey Thompson

Here are the 2 different drag tires that are mentioned above. One is the ET Street Race tire and the other is the ET Street Radial. The race tire is closer to the hoosier drag radial thread and compound. I've seen both side by side at the track and they are very close. The MT drag radial is just a little harder but like I said earlier many run them and they do last longer. Full blown slicks will slip on a poorly prepped track. It really comes down to that.

I'm on the hunt for a wheel tire pkg that I can drive on the street then pull up to the drag strip or willow sprigs and RACE. I will start with 19's I think DYMAGS and then I'm still on the hunt for the best all around tires. Once I find the right combo JUICEE you will have a great set of 18" HRE C21's with new DR's on a payment plan of coures...

I don't think you will find anything better at street and track than the HRE comp series, especially in 18s....

Anybody want BFG drag radials for a ridiculously good deal? 275/35/18?

I want to move to a 305 MT radial.

Rim's take your pick, but tires will be sacrificing one direction or the other. A great drag tire needs a soft sidewall and the opposite goes for road racing. There are some DOT Road Racing tires that have an overall wet/dry advantage but tread wear is going to be poor. A trip to willow is a set of brakes, rotors and tires. The drag strip many only cost you some rubber and an axle if traction is great.

305 DOT R Pirelli Corsas on 19" Dymags net me very consistant 1.77-1.80 60' times, not great, but nothing to sneeze at either considering you can roll up to the track on them, air down to 22-23psi (I found to be optimum), and then air up and drive home on them.

Most certainly two completely different sets of tires. IMO, if your looking for a trade off on a tire you can drive to the track and then drag her. The Nitto's are pretty decent. The only problem I've seen with those are they get hard very quickly. Most of our guys seem to get 30 runs out of them before they get too hard to hook.

I found your statement interesting about Willow. Our rides are very close in weight. The big track is not a hard braking track if your smooth. And like anyplace, smooth is fast. BUT, turn two is a major tire eater. No doubt a full day there pushing the edge will cost you two fronts, that corner just eats the living crap out of the edge.

I also achieved my best time and 60 ft on 19" renntech rims and 305's in a michelin pilot sport cup. The 60 ft best was a 1.69 with mostly mid 1.8s

Rick the 19" DYMAGS with an R comp tire would likely improve drastically your cars overall performance, street and road course. It wont hurt you on the strip unless its not prepped. You can always use my ET STREET s on 17" if you wanna break something.

Please check on the "line lock" and I can help you find wheels just PM me yer dream, I think DYMAGS on the MPSC or the CORSAS, OR TOYO R888

I did some testing on the Vbox last night. I was able to get a 12.1x with a 1.9 sec 60' time. So while not quite as fast as my sedan, I am hoping to bring back a low 12 second time slip in my 08 335i coupe with just tune/gas/tires. I really want to get her in the top 10 335i times on dragtimes as her Xmas present! Got 2hrs of sleep after packing at 12:30am this morning, and now have to drive the 800 mile trip! Wish me luck!
