Anyone brave enough change their mufflers to Magnaflows

No x-pipe will bolt right in, you'll have to do some cutting... The Magnaflow x-pipe fits perfectly though, and is rather inexpensive. I went with the 2.5 inch x-pipe and a local shop adapted it to fit with ease.

PersianGodFather has a nice exhaust setup I heard his car while following him to a meet in LA. I believe he said he removed the resenator and gutted the stock exhaust and it sounded really good and said it only cost him like 75 bucks.

Yes you can. Make sure they cut the top of the mufflers so it gets covered. Removing just the insulation will make it louder and removing the baffles will make it raspier. No gas smell, thats in the cats.

I have a set of Magnaflows, #14815's, with Assured Performance quad Round SS tips I just took off my E500 and replaced them with an E55 AMG exhaust and x-pipe... Originally, the Magnaflows did sound better than my stock exhaust, but it just wasn't the sound I was after. They are somewhat mellow at idle, but just barely audible over stock. A deeper tone is what you hear but no rumble really, definately not like a truck exhaust. As you accelerate normally ( not on the pedal hard), the sport exhaust note and rumble picks up and is actually kinda' nice. Once you reach your cruising speed and throttle back a little to maintain speed, the sound changes from sport rumble back to kind of a deep hum. At 1800 - 2000 Rpm, that's the sound you hear... It's not deafening by any means, but audible. Almost any volume on the stereo drowns it out... If you accelerate hard, either from a stop or punching if while crusing, the sport rumble comes back immediately and the sound is actually pretty nice, but not too loud inside the car. It's not ricey, trucky, etc. IMHO, just sounds like an authoritative V8. It's not like Borla's on a Camaro, or Fowmasters on a Dodge... It's pretty low, somewhat throaty, but really no high end rasp as some muffs get when nearing redline... The E55 exhaust with x-pipe to me is now too mellow, expsecially compared to the Magnaflows so I'm now planning to either gut the packing or try to get the SL500 System from Billy Boat Exhaust to work on my E500... If interested, I can send some pics of the muffs after I clean them up and get the road dirt off them. They are for sale, have the inlet pipes at the correct angle and hangers that fit perfectly to the W211 E class. It might be an inexpensive way to go jus tto see if you like the sound as opposed to buying the muffs, tips, thengetting it all installed... Half the work is done for you already...

I gotta agree. The Magnaflow's are cheap sounding at best. The stock AMG sound might not be good enough for most around here, but at least choose a quality replacement... As another poster said, MF's have a very distinct sound to them and will sound relatively the same on most of their applications, and that's a sound that I personally would want my AMG to be no part of.

If I wanted to change the sound of the exhaust, I would audition muffler sounds (online) then when I found one that I liked, I would buy just the muffler and take it to an exhaust shop and have them cut out the stock muffler and weld in the new one. Exhaust piping is all the same, there is no need to buy a full on cat-back kit, unless you plan to return to stock someday with relative ease. Plus I want to keep the stock look/feel of the car, so the stock tips would have to stay for me.

Wow.... such hate for Magnaflows? I have Magnaflows and they sound pretty damn good if you ask me.... also took the mufflers off at one point and just had tips.... sounded incredible, like a Nascar above 3500 rpm, but 15 minutes at 72 mph on the 15 freeway drove me nutz! Talk about frickin drone. Not to mention it sounds like I'm going 120 when i'm actually going 20.... couldn't hear my bluetooth in the car, so the mufflers went back on (do miss setting off car alarms when I started my car though, made the damn ground shake
).... FYI I bought the car with Magnaflows already on it. Not sure what kind they are but sdunham's write up is pretty accurate.... Sounds relatively tame at idle, but step on it and it'll make a little bit of noise (and by a little bit I mean a hell of a lot more than a stock AMG exhaust). Plus, Magnaflows have a straight through design..... To each his own, but for an upgrade option that is relatively cheap I think the Magnaflows are a pretty good option. Granted, if money were no object, I would have the eissenmann exhaust..... but if that were the case, I'd also have the sl65 black series arriving shortly too..... needless to say, I can keep waiting cuz it's not coming. If anybody is interested, I could take a short video with my camera and post it.
