Carmax offered me $17K for my Benz...LOL

I am NOT selling my car but was in looking for something for my wife...the sales person was adamant about valuing the car I came in...my E55 (45k miles).

I told them to spare me the disappointment but let them go at it anyways...I have seen E55's selling for 22-28K on ebay and S65s selling for 34-38K.

The guy comes back and says the car was in good condition and offered 17,500. LOL.

I asked why so low and he said no luxury cars are moving now and it would be a big risk to keep my car on the lot as they are still depreciating 1K per month.

He said they bought a 2006 E55 for 30K the other month.

So I sold my 1994 700whp Supra BEFORE fast & furious for 30K then bought an $80K car which 5.5 years later is worth 17K while that same supra is worth about $35k...now that's funny.

To me the car is fundamentally worth more than that (regardless of the mods) so I will never sell it. This market is crazy.

I have not checked the #s but I would imagine an old 400hp 2003 M5 or a 2005 STi is worth the same or more than an '03 E55.

I also had a GT-R dealer call me back and say he needed to move 4 this year and had come down from $98K this summer to a few $K over sticker (roughly mid 80s). I laughed and told him when they sell for under MSRP to call me...that is the original 70K sticker.

The market is crazy right now..... the prices are changing so fast that it's hard to keep up. Three weeks ago, there were a few 2005 and 2006 E55s selling for $30 to $32k and I'm not even sure if they ever got sold

Thats what I paid for my 98' 40Kmilage C43 3-4 years ago....damn. I would have held on to that cash had I known I could have had a W211 for similar so soon. I love my car but man do I wish I was in the market for another right now...I've started a little V12TT fund so that in a couple years when/if those drop even more I can pick up a CL/S/SL etc...

Hell, I'm sure my W202 is falling into the "I'm 16 and its my first car" price range..reason #1246 to keep it

I've grown to consider vehicles like clothing, its and expense that you enjoy and use, and I'd be glad to get anything back on an old one. Many consider it and investment...not sure why.

The market is extremely soft for high end cars right now. I will probably never get even the money I have in mods for the car. So I'm keeping it

That's nuts. 17K, yeah whatever, CARMAX.

It's best to keep your car(s) now, worst time to sell best time to buy. On these GT-R's that dealer is crazy, in this volatile financial climate over MSRP is stupid for any car at any dealer now. Cars being offered at crazy low prices are not moving, how can you ask MSRP?

IDK-Perhaps someone will pay it. As they say one born every minute.

The Nissan dealer in OKC is trying to get 10-15K over on a GTR. They have a car for three weeks now and turning down offers at MSRP right and left. Amazing...

The GT-Rs are coming down from cloud 9. I've seen some in the Mid 70z now. Also looks like Nissan raised the price from $67K to $78K for base model.

...Car dealer are a joke and Carmax is the worst. $1000 a month??? I guess that means in a year and a half E55's will be free

I hate how these dealers talk to you (us) like you're an idiot. They give you the line how luxo cars are not moving, but you know when some poor sucker comes in to take a look at it they are going to tell him how rare it is and try to bend him over for $27,000. I'm all for dealerships making a little money, but they all try to break the bank on every deal. They must realize in the day and age of instant information that most people don't fall for their ***** much anymore. I guess my business logic is different than theirs, I would rather move 3 cars at $4000-$5000 per car profit than 1 car at a $10,000 profit...

Thats a total Joke. I only have a C55 But i wouldnt let it got for under $30K with 40,000 miles and all my mods. Not that my car is for sale Its just worth that much to me. of 17K is an insult. I would have told the guy he's out of his bleeping mind. Maybe they should check the production number and then they will know these AMG's are rare. I think its safe to say for every 10 to 20 E Classes I see 1 is an E55. I know with my car from 2004-07 only 4600 C55 were made and I think only 1750 of them came to the USA. That would be a weapon i would use in selling my car.

Carmax is extremely corporate and uses computers to price out everything they have. They enter in the miles, etc. and it shoots out a price to them based on the model, year, condition, etc.

They offered me $2500 for my truck I had a few years ago- went out and sold it outright a week later for 3 times that.

Carmax isn't a bad place to buy- but you have to do your research and know how much the car is worth before you show up. They must sell mostly to consumers who want an easy transaction- you can be in and out of that place in less than an hour. Don't ask me how I know- let's just say you live and learn

I see you're from NVA, which Carmax did you go to? Dulles is very bad when it comes to trade-in. I've bought and sold cars to/from Carmax and will never do it again.

A Mercedes obviously!
An E55 isn't the kind of car that Carmax really wants anyway so the lowball offer is expected.

The most amusing offer on a highend MB I've had was when my father was looking to get rid of his '00 S500 when it was four years old with around 70,000 miles on it. He took it to an Audi dealer who offered him £10,000...for a car that was £96,000 sticker. He ended up getting just shy of £20,000 privately.

I was looking at the '06 S65 on Ebay but it sold offline for near the $38K. Can't believe some dude lost 165K in what...2.5 years? Must have gone bankrupt or foreclosed.

Its the perfect time to buy...perhaps I will get another AMG.

I talked my cousin into getting one...he is eyeing an '06 with 35K miles for $31-34K.

At some point though these cars have to trade sideways for some time...for instance a decent 1993-95 mazda RX7 has been a 10-18K car for the past 10 years and has just stuck there.

Prices will only continue to plummet. These cars are only desirable to a group of enthusiasts. The businessman with a fat wallet who wants a go-fast Mercedes will lease a new AMG. The 20-something guy with some decent change will not want a used AMG because maintenance costs on these cars aren't gonna get cheaper. Used AMGs are best suited to people who know a little something about them.

As much as I hate Mercedes because of my horrible experience with this W220, a 2005 C55 will have a market value in the teens starting in 2009. It's hard to pass on so much car for so little money!

Must be just this type of car. Carmax has been great to me. From dealer I paid 31k for a used FX45, drove it for a year, and got 31k from Carmax. I also bought a Scion Xa from dealer for my wife for 13k, drove it 2 yrs and still got 11k from Carmax. They must go for a target group of cars, the rest they convince you they dont want.

Man, please tell me where you are seeing 2006 E55s going for that low? I am seriously in the market for one. But everything I see is in the high 30s-low 40s:

Ebay search: http://tinyurl.com/72sc7o

Autotrader search: http://tinyurl.com/a5wero

Cars.com search: http://tinyurl.com/7cgc3u

I want a CPO 2006 E55 with pano, not more than 30,000 miles, for $35,000 or so. Is that possible?

Just watch BARRETT JACKSON AUCTION tell me the car sales a down and low priced.. I sold 5 cars yesterday while the other dealers on the street closed. If you expect a Dealer to pay full price for your car .. Go try to sell your ROLEX, Wife's Diamonds, Mods Come on guys that's like asking a trucking company to deliver your goods for the cost of GAS
Once again " OUR CARS ARE NOT INVESTMENTS" Now quit your crying and start havin some FUN with your car... Damn, I just spent 2k on a CALL GIRL, I had a great time, but I was really pissed off that she wouldn't return my MONEY when I was done giving her the all mighty SHLONG..

nissan lost my business, and a lot of others for that matter i bet, when they released the gt-r. they claimed is could put down some amazing numbers, then said if you tried to drive it the way it was meant to be driven, they would void your warranty.
soon as they build a car worthy of repeated abuse, they can raise prices. those GT-Rs are worthless to me without the use of the launch control.

wish i could turn in my car early on lease, i would get a E55 or E63 in a heartbeat
