CLK but loves my Fords
Dang what happened to MB? that thing is streiht up ugly. Genesis looks 10x better man. Styling is falling off bad in E class. I remember back in the the day like 96 97 when the 210 E class came out...it was stunning, it was gorgeous, jaw dropping, then 211 came out ... its was ok sososos, interior was really great, ext was ok. Now this? they fell off.

Initial impressions, based solely on the pictures, is that the details are a bit fussy for the sake of being fussy...i.e., design for the sake of design. I'm referring especially to the turn signals in the rear view mirror housings and the driving lights.
The AMG package is the best looking of the bunch (naturally!) and the wheels from the photo reminds me of the design found on the W201 190E 2.5-16 Evo II which remains one of my MB favourites. The Elegance version is, IMHO, the least successful with its Brabus-like double driving lights.
The rear of the vehicle is rather bland looking with seemingly Asian marques influenced design language - going generic like any Hyundai/Honda/Toyota
The updated interior is per current MB and I like it, I really liked the W221 S-class that I almost leased instead of the E63, so the interior will suit me fine...even with the gear selector on the steering column which works surprisingly well.
Overall design is cohesive...but lost some of the distinctiveness in translation...with some traditional Mercedes-Benz touches.
I'm looking forward to seeing it in person at the NYIAS in April before really making up my mind with a thumb up or down...and I hope they've further refined the driving characteristics and responses on par with the newer C and S classes.

I think the current E drives great.

And I agree the S-class also drove very well, though I've only had the S550 4matic for a couple of extended test drives, never the AMG versions.
As for the W211 E-class, while I agree it drives very well overall, I think it falls short of the E60 5-series in the steering response and feel and hope the W212 improves in this aspect.

Merc did a great job when they re styled the C, SL, CL, and S classes, but i don't think they gave there best effort when it came to the E class and the new CLK class or E class coupe or whatever its called , just my .02
